The DIY thread - DIYourself

Question for yous with electrical experience.

I need to replace what appears to be a faulty outlet receptacle in one of the kids rooms. When we bought this house in 2003 we had all the devices (outlets, switches) replaced and remediated by an electrician with proper "pigtails" due to aluminum wiring. Since then I have not had to do any work on any of these devices.

Would this be a safe replacement device since its indicated for CO/ALR applications? Or do I need to call someone in to make sure its done legit?

I am more than capable to replace a light switch or an outlet device and all the breakers are labeled properly since we also upgraded the service to 200AMP when we moved in.

It's the one thing about this house that I would change if I could (i.e. rip and replace all wiring) but it's just not practical.

Thanks gents.

Go ahead and replace it! That is a def a DIY. Just make sure there is no insulation under the screw when attaching wires,
and the black one goes on the side with the smaller slot in the face.

Isn't that the gold terminal in the back, it's easier to remember it that way for me.

yes ! black to gold. unless they are both the same finish, then it is the small side.
that makes more sense to me, cause the "dangerous" side would be the one that would be more difficult to insert a fork.

thanks guys already sent the middle son to get 2 of them (in case with my luck the first one is defective).

They make the connection points pretty clear since on side is clearly labeled:

I am not daring to provide advise but just trying to understand correctly. What did the 2003 remediation consist of ? Wiring a copper wire pigtail to the outlet/switch connectors and then join said pigtail to the aluminum wires (which I'm assuming are solid) with wire nuts? Is the faulted outlet still available on the market, why not just replace it with the same item?

something like that honestly i don't remember the specifics and I didnt watch them do it. I just know I had to have it done and documented for the homeowners insurance to issue my policy.

Yesterday was cross a few things off the list day.

First up was to swap out the blade on the free lawnmower I found last Oct with one that does Mulching for all the leaves.
I never really looked at the old blade the mower works great but I guess it was a little worn out.

Put the new one on and I swear the mower now sounds like it has a turbo charger. Easy peasy.

The next order or business was the loose mailbox that I was informed about while I was at Lowe’s so the same time I got the blade I picked up a new post. I already had a post holder in the shed so I was all set.

I checked the post and it was all rotted along with the post holder. A few hits side to side with the sledgehammer and the old one came out pretty easy.

I cut the new post down to size and did a few measurements with the mailbox on the arm of the post to make sure it would not hang over the curb too far. Triple checked the location and realized this one needs to move back a bit and then marked the spot for the new post holder.

I used the cut off section of the post to drive in the holder with the sledgehammer. Here’s where it went to shit.

The cutoff 2” section is now wedged into the holder so tight I could not get it out. After 5 minutes if cursing now I break out the reciprocating saw and the drill. The plan is to drill around the edges of the wood and pry it out. I cut off most of it and started drilling. That process took 20 minutes and 500 more curse words but it worked. And my back was screaming bloody murder the whole time.

Cleaned it up and packed some dirt from the yard into the old whole. I don’t have any grass seed left so I guess that’s what I’m getting today. Or not.

When I was done I had my last Summer Shandy beer. At least I didn’t have to go back and forth to the hardware store like usual.

Wife is away sent a pic. Got the heart emoji back so it’s approved.

And yes that’s my sons car with the offset license plate bracket because when he got the bumper replaced after a fender bender he didn’t want them drilling holes to mount it.

Got my $199 fire pit today from Tractor Supply.
Read the reviews and people like it, but someone posted it burned through the thin metal bottom.
So I added a piece of 1/4 inch diamond plate to the bottom of mine. That should be good.

Friend of mine has one. Its served him well for s'mores and keeping him warm while he's drinkin his beer outside. Fire it up!

Crossing another thing off the list this afternoon.

After the great Generator fail during Hurricane Ida I had to order new carb and choke assembly since I could not get the old one to stop leaking.

I tried contacting the manufacturer customer service and literally got no response. So I rolled the dice on some Amazon parts that looked correct.

Lucky for me they were an exact match. The only thing I had to do was carefully scrape off one gasket from the front of the choke assembly since my kit was only for the carb replacement. Somehow I succeeded in doing this without

1. Slicing my finger
2. Ripping the gasket

I also replaced the fuel line and added the fuel filter from the kit. It didn’t have a filter before so I figure can’t hurt to install it.

Damn if the thing didn’t start on the first pull. Total cost was $27 for the carb and the choke assembly was basically free cause I had and Amazon gift card balance that I didn’t remember.

Claiming a win on this one.

I have found that unit "manufacturer" doesn't matter as much as the engine manufacturer. If you can find the Briggs & Stratton model...the parts work.

Yup thats exactly what I did. Lifan (my green generator) is somehow connected to Honda and the parts were a 100% match.
