hey i was just wondering if anyone has had a chance to try one of the new giant 29ers..what did ya think ?any input on the bike would be appreciated...ty

I have one and I know of at least 2 others on this forum who have the 29-1 and 29-2. I love my XTC 29er 1. I got a great deal on a demo at the last Jorbafest. The only complaint I have is the squeaky rear brake. That was pretty much taken care of with a larger rotor but I think Giant will replace the original pads with organic pads through the dealer.

I rode the One at 6 mile......and whoa......loved it. More responsive than my Cannondale 29er One. It seemed light, and the Fox w/ thru axle is a point and shoot front -end. The lightness may be attributed to the short rear triangle, rather than actual weight. The rear end hopped up with little effort.

Cool paint and blue anodized trinkets.

The Giant rims lend themselves to a tubless conversion. I converted the front, with Stans kit and some extra tape.....it's held on since the 24 hours of Allamuchy, and that was August! Ran the stock tire. Karma.

I'm one of the guys Tonyride referred to -- I have the 29er-2. I bought this after the JORBAfest from the Giant dealer through Cycleworks.

I bought the 29er-2 as my backup bike to my Giant Trance X1. The 29er-2 is a great bike, although it is a little bit heavier than the 29er-1. I really enjoy riding her in Deer Park, Stephens and Kittatinny -- I still prefer my Trance X1 bike in places like Allamuchy and Mahlon.

I kept her mostly stock, except I changed out the skinny grips for Ouri grips and upgraded the front disc from 160mm to 185mm.

The xtc 29er frames are light. I've read that that some mediums were in the 3.1 area. My large xtc2 frame came in at 3lbs 3ounces with derailleur hanger, headset cups, and cage bolts. The builds on them aren't the lightest but you can always work on that.

ride it first to see what you like or don't. other than that, replace broken stuff with upgraded stuff.

Yeah, if for nothing else the fork.
You're very limited to your selection of forks for the XTC 29 as it has a tapered head tube so your fork will have to have a tapered steer tube (1.5"-1-1/8" I believe). As Walter said, if you know you're going to upgrade components then you should get the XTC 29-1 intead of the -2.

As of January 10th rock shox is making the reba available with the tapered steerer. I'm pretty sure that the they will have the tapered steerer version available in white and black with a standard quick release and only in black for the 20mm thru axle. I wanted a white fork but I also wanted the thru axle so I ordered the white non tapered thru axle version and ordered the white tapered steerer uppers seperately. It's costing more but it's exactly what I want (I don't like fox forks). I'm pretty sure the rest of the suspension companies will be releasing tapered steerer forks in the very near furure, I'm starting to notice the tapered head-tubes on a lot of bikes. You can also run a bigger bearing in the bottom and use a standard 1-1/8in steerer fork, just without the benefits of the tapered steerer.

then id be taken half da fun ot of things...yea yea yea i no just ride it right..lol:cry:

Well, the xtc 2 is cheaper for a reason. The fork, wheels, brakes and drivetrain are all lower grade than the xtc 1. There is roughly a $700 difference between the two bikes, buying a new Fox fork(for instance) will cost that much alone. Then add all the other goodies and it all adds up.

Trust me, Im the last person to be talking about upgrades. Just trying to help out.🙂 Buy what you want and enjoy!
