Moon Shadows are Evil

About two weeks ago, I did an early morning ride in Nocamixon. It was really cold out, and I was under-dressed, but I was also weairng my usual all-black gear. At one point, I came around a corner and saw a hunter standing right there. I had no idea that part of the park was open to hunting (it is and there is one 8 1/2X11 sheet of paper on the bulletin board that mentions it that I guess I must have missed somehow. 🙄) Anyway, I went from being just frozen to frozen and scared to death that I was going to be shot. And the hunter said, "Probably want to get some orange ..." Since I tend to agree completely with whatever people pointing guns at me say, I would concur with recommendations to wear high visibility clothing.

Full disclosure: I still don't have any and probably won't get any. But in my defense, I usually ride in Philly at night and being easily visible to those who would beat and rob you -- I have to believe that's is not such a great thing ...

It was in my post about the covered bridges, not a rant per say.

I honestly don't think the hi-viz stuff makes that much of a difference, especially at night. For sure you can see them, but for someone that is texting or just not paying attention at all, you could be wearing a flashing lime green gorrila suit and it wouldn't make a difference.

Not going to argue with you here...However I wear one mainly because:

A: Someone gave it to me for free and it have really nice pockets for my stuff and its light and warm

B: When I do end up on the hood of someones car in the dark...provided that I live....I want to be able to say "I was wearing this jacket and glowing like neon sign, bullshit you didnt see me!"

but that said...I dont really feel any safer wearing it.

I'm wearing all black on the road. There are reflective spots on the gear and if it's dark, I have a blinky and headlight.
On my MTB, I wear the orange mtbnj stuff to keep from being shot.

.

Utah's jacket was ruining my night vision that one time.

i inherited zyrtec jerseys - neon green, white and black. i'm a fan of obnoxious colors, not just for avoiding being hit or shot, but i also just like bold and ugly colors. for example, the shoes i'm wearing at work right now are proudly hideous:

you should have seen the look on my face compared to the look on my wife's face when i pulled these out of the box.

i think the lights on the bike are going to get you more noticed than anything in the dark. i don't think bright colors don't matter a ton unless its reflective, or when a car is pretty close to you, but like utah said, it can't hurt to have it on.

Lol I have the same jacket as Utah's. Though I just bought another gore wear all black. Trust me you want to be highly visible in Gotham.

It is funny how the trends come and go with this stuff. Hell, even Rapha just made some hi viz stuff to capture that part of the market and they have always been on the anti high viz stuff.

Clark, I am not sure what those shoes are, but I don't think you should be wearing them 🙂

I am glad to be back posting and in my head would like to post a few times a week but I lack thinks to post about and my work day seems to always get in the way of writing this stuff. In any case, I had been planning to write a post regarding riding your bike and pain, but was failing to come up with any notable content regarded the issue., so I didn’t write it. Come this morning, I had something of an eventful ride and blamo, content. So here are some exerts:

Wake up right at alarm;
Normal routine
Temps Low 40’s, very nice morning;
Figure out route as I go, as usual;
Startled by a guy walking his dogs, wearing a safety vest and a hard hat and facing away from the road , reminds me of the scene in Blair Witch when the guy is standing in the corner in the basement;
Ride a little faster, that shit was freaky;
End up riding right past the road I planned to turn on;
Plan reroute in head;
Turn onto Fiddler’s Creek Rd;
Normal descent heading to entrance to Baldpate;
“Climb” slight rise;
Hear to clip-clocks;
See flash of fur and brown;
Bike stops;
On chip seal;
Standing;
Fuck, Fuck, Fuck;
Walk around in road;
Fuck Fuck, Fuck;
Curse deer;
Assess body,
Walk to bike 10’ away;
Assess bike;
Tighten shoe buckle;
Find water bottle;
See front shifter is fucked;
Rear hood is fucked;
Rubbing front wheel;
Loosen front brake;
Start riding;
Leg hurts;
Parts sting;
See skin sticking out from arm warmer and sock;
Note that is “neat”;
Note pain above knee;
10 miles to home;
Commuter dude with light a plenty doesn’t catch me;
Feels cold;
Home;
Note pain above knee;
Drive to work, stop to get gas;
Attendant looks like a black version of Pearl;
Tells me real men wear pink (have a pink jersey on);
Look like an old man getting out of car;
At work.

So yeah, I hit a deer / a deer hit me this morning. It literally came out of nowhere and happened so fast (faster than the elusive left-right signal), before I knew it I was on my feet assessing the damage. I have never been one to sit around after I fall and to be honest, I don’t even remember hitting the chip seal or getting up. All in all I am lucky I was only going 15 mph as the damage to the bike and I is minimal. Front shifter is done, tape torn, rear shifter seems ok but hard to tell since it was knocked out of position and shifting was all crazy on the way home, may have to have hanger checked. I either hit right above me knee on the handlebar or on the deer and it is pretty swollen right now and I have about 50% mobility in that leg. Minor road rash on ankle, elbow, and knees, but none picture worthy, however I did take e a picture of my ankle and the inside of my sock, which has shavings of skin in it, because I think this is “neat”. I am counting my blessings as it could have been much worse. The thing I am pissed about the most is that today was supposed to be a double ride day for me and that looks to be thwarted. There are worse things.

So anyone have a working front SRAM shifter in my model they want to sell?

So That’s What Hitting a Deer on a Bike is Like

I don’t think it is supposed to look like that

Well I guess when you ask for content, content finds you. Let's hope a truck load of hippos doesn't escape in your area overnight.

Obligatory comment about being happy you're not hurt. Or hurt that much. Obligatory follow-up about healing fast. Obligatory random final comment about ham sandwiches.

It seems like the deer act extra stoopid during the month of November. Glad you're OK, that's some scary shit.

I thin it's mating season isn't it? I've come real close to nailing them on the MTB when I lived in West Orange, always this time of year.
Glad you didn't die.

Damn, man, glad you're okay. I've seen the damage deer can do. I had one car wrecked by one and one once flew clear through my dad's car -- peeled back the top, and tore a path of destruction through the front and rear before blowing out the back window in pieces -- the deer was in pieces, that is. Kind of disgusting. My dad wasn't injured except for some glass cuts, which was amazing considering what happened to that car -- it was a blood-soaked heap of twisted metal in the end. And he was only going about 10 mph faster than you were when it happened, so you really are very, very lucky. You should maybe consider installing a battering ram on the front of you bike to avoid such unpleasantries in the future.

i would like to see the deer's strava file and compare it to yours to see when you guys intersect.

i almost was taken out by a buck at six mile a couple weeks ago. i was with a group at the lead spot, started turning on the gas when riding along the field on blue. this buck came outta nowhere and was very close to taking me out. if i had put the gas on about 10 yards earlier we probably would have connected.

I work in an area that allows hunting. Last week a hunter got an 8 pointer that was over 150 lbs. This time of year bucks are chasing doe's, which means they are letting their heat missle do the thinking. This makes them more vulnerable to hunters and moving vehicles/bikes.

Yup rut season and bucks have only one thing in mind score as many doe as possible. I had a close call last month going at speed down hill, as soon as I saw doe in full sprint I hit the brakes and sure enough buck came right behind her. The bigger question is did your rapha survive without harm. Glad your ok.
