MDR Spring Work Weekend

Howdy Friends of Mahlon Dickerson Reservation!

This coming Friday through Sunday, April 18-20, we will be digging in a new trail near Saffin Pond. This is a new 0.65 mile trail that has been tagged and flagged with MCPC staff. This is an exciting first step towards an overall reroute plan to get more of the trails off of double track and out of persistently wet areas. This is the blue route below.

Time/Location:
  • Friday - We will meet at Saffin Pond at 10am. If you can't meet until later in the day, no worries you will easily be able to find us in the woods. Just follow the yellow trail from Saffin and then find the pink flags. They are easy to follow. I don't expect to work much past 4 or 5.
  • Saturday/Sunday - We will meet at Saffin Pond at 9am. Plan on finishing around 4 on Saturday and likely 12 on Sunday.
Tools Provided/Needed:
  • I have limited hard harts, eye protection, and gloves that all are expected to wear. If you have your own PPE, please bring it.
  • I will have most of the tools needed that we can carry to the work site. I am short on metal rakes and hoes so if you have one of those, please bring. If you have your own small hand saw or loppers those would be helpful in clearing the trail way. I’ll have my small chainsaw for the bigger logs.
Food: Bring your own lunch for each day, snacks, and water.

Shoot me an email Karl@JORBA.org for more info.

I forgot to follow up on this! We got the trail “unofficially” open. It’s easy to follow now. We still need to do a bunch of bench cutting and shore up some of our rockwork but it’s rideable. Keep an eye out for future dig dates. Once we can officially open it I’ll add to Trailforks.

Still plugging along on this new trail. Sunday and Monday we had the MEVO crew onsite to do some pro building and help me develop my own skills. We cleaned up the first two rocky areas and got a ton of side hilling and rockwork done on that first punchy climb. Have two more work trips planned for Aug 10/11 with MEVO. Shoot me a DM if you would like to join or email radtrailcrew@gmail.com Pics never do this work justice but here are some shots of current status.

What's "MEVO"??

I’m happy to report that this new trail is now officially open. I’ve updated it on Trailforks. In the end it took volunteers 10 days to get the work done and I estimate it took something like 300+ collective hours. I learned a ton about trail building through this effort and am excited to get more efficient as we move on to future projects.

Save the date. Oct 3/4/5 we will be digging a small reroute on Purple (Cascade) along the stream to get away from the 3 steep eroded areas.
