The Guitar Player Thread.

I need another amplifier like a hole in the head... and especially a 100W tube beast. But when this was announced few months ago, I figured "what the hell... I'll put my name on the email list..." and the notification popped into my inbox last week. "Oh screw it..." I'll get one. I haven't received a shipping notification yet, but in theory I should see it within a week.

Essentially, a modified Marshall... to go along with the JCM800 and Origin 50 Marshalls I already have (as well as about half-dozen other amps I have...).

Friend asked me to get her guitar working and cleaned up to give her son for a birthday gift. She offered him to trade it in for a new one and he said “No, I want this one working”. I’m glad he did, was pleasantly surprised when she dropped off a US made ‘80’s Peavey Mantis. Sweet little guitar, needed some tlc, picture doesn’t do justice to how gacked up it was. Pickguard was broken in half, thankfully, as the ‘80’s called and wanted that pointy thing back. I made a new one and changed up the shape. Electronics were messed with by someone without a soldiering iron and two of the saddles were corroded beyond being usable, locating them was fun as they haven’t been made in nearly 40 years. The tone circuit on this is different. From about 7 on it starts cutting off a coil on the humbucker with it being cut totally to a single coil at 10.

That looks awesome! As an owner of two Explorers, I love me some pointy guitars.

The bridge looks like a Kahler - who are still in business and sell replacement parts direct. If you don't want to deal with the tuning issues, they sell a fixed version that should be a direct replacement and will look similar but not have the cam system. The two holes next to the bar hole are for bridge adjustments. The hole next to the bar "should" adjust a plastic taper that puts tension on the bar so you can move it to a position and it will stay there, although it is very common for these to be worn out after 40 years. The hole in the middle of the bridge adjusts the tension of the cam springs so you can adjust the cam for different string tension.

I currently have 3 guitars with Kahler bridges (two factory installed Gibsons and a '79 Les Paul Custom that was converted sometime back in the early/mid 80s) with plans for a 4th (I want a rough replica of Dave Murray's Strat from the Live After Death live recording).

Pointy and red! Beauty from 85. Made in San Dimas. I bought new at Sam Ash. Crazy what they're worth. Haven't played it much in over 20 years and have thought to sell many times. But everytime I take out of the case and play it I quickly tell myself "NEVER SELL THIS." Still in as new condition too. Rock on!Charvel 2025 Lark st.jpeg

Never seen anything that old in such good shape. Guitar is nice too.

Yeah, it’s a Kahler Flyer bridge. First time messing with one, pretty straight forward to set up and works as it should. Quality stuff, bearings in the pivot and everything. I sourced the saddles from Kahler. If it needed more than two, I would have probably converted it to the newer style of saddles.

The guitar plays nice, even comfortable sitting down unlike some other pointy guitars I’ve played. I’m talking to you Ibanez Xiphos. The pickup sounds a little like some bulk surplus Dimarzios I have. The neck joint is suspect, it has a primitive tilt adjust set up that isn’t very precise. But this still will be a great guitar to learn on. Kid was already given a terribly bad set up guitar, by his uncle several years ago. As well intentioned as it may be, obviously giving a kid a poorly set up guitar to learn on can be discouraging.

Hey all - my nephew wants to "mess" with my brothers aging bass amp - think 40+.
I haven't tested it yet, I'm going to guess the pots are a mess, and probably the jacks too.

Given the last one sold on eBay for $70...
He has no $$, so wants to repurpose the speaker in the car (don't judge) - and maybe save the amp section (he plays a bit)

Any big deal cutting into this? Any tricks when I start turning knobs and get crackle (or nothing at all)

fire? (it might self-immolate.)

Picture from internet - his is in a bit better condition.

You know that chainsaw you just fixed? Have at it! Actually those old Peavey speakers are really good, especially if it's a Black Widow.
