1x drivetrain

I've tried searching here and there, so don't hate me--I'm new to the game--but what are the benefits/drawbacks of riding a 1x on my 29er? I've noticed a lot of newer bikes being sold with that setup standard. Thanks!

its a little lighter. And front derailleurs are just not as smooth. With the wider range of gears available in the back, a front der isnt as necessary. If your still a little new to the game, stick with 2x or 3x. You can always go to 1x from there.

Only drawback is no granny gear, but you'll get stronger to make up for it. Plus you still have plenty of options with what seems like the standard 11-36T cassette for 1x's. When I had a 3x crank, I think the only time I used the large ring was on the road section at Six Mile, coming from Red back to Canal lot.

The main reasons I switched to 1x10 was less clutter for a cleaner look, less parts to break, and more front clearance over stuff.

If you use your bike for more than just singletrack though, it might make sense to keep more rings for extended flat, carriage, or road rides.

I switched over because all of the cool kids were doing it, but it wound up working great for me. Also, my chain was dropping and I changed a whole bunch of parts, so I just went 1x. I don't really miss the front derailleur. I have a RaceFace Narrow-Wide 30 tooth in the front and put a 42-tooth 1-up chainring on the back. I don't miss the little ring, but I do sometimes reach for my front shifter.

How is that setup working for you? Is it on FS bike? I just did the same to my RIP 9 but didn't have time to test it. Back in a day I used to run 1x9 with 30T front. Had to use bashguard and chain stopper but it worked well.

I have it on a Salsa Beargrease. Works great, there are no climbs that I haven't cleared due to the gearing. I actually bought a similar setup for the 29er that I seldom ride.

Thanks for the input guys! I'm going to go with a larger front ring for now (36t) to ease into it and to hit the flats a bit harder. Thanks!

did this with 32T - works great. (fs 26r)

the 32t/42t combo is very close to the 24t/36t of my 29r hardtail.
