7/10/09 Baldpate Conditions

I had high expectations for a ride this afternoon at Baldpate. It turns out I was only slightly disappointed. Most of the trails are dry and in good condition, but there are a few tacky mudholes that have been destroyed by horses. The worst areas are in the Honey Hollow area, the Ridge Trail, and the Pleasant Valley Trail. It's too bad because I really wanted to blast down the Kuser trail but wasn't able to on account of the chewed-up sections.

The good news is that now is a perfect time for a bunch of bikes to get out there and smooth out the tacky sections.

It was a beautiful day, the view was spectacular, and I only saw 2 other people, so all in all it was an excellent ride. 🙂

7/15 ride on Baldpate

It has been a while since I have been up on the hill. People who say mountain bikes do more damage than horses should go up there are take a look at what has been happening. I was shocked by the destruction on a number of the trails, especially in sensitive wetter areas. I guess horse folk do not follow the same rules of the trail...

I am looking forward to new trails being developed up there. I still think it will be the best place in central Jersey to ride in a couple of years!

Yes, there have definitely been more horses this year than last year and the trails are getting beat up as a result. It is amazing the amount of damage that horses can inflict on the trail. I think one of the priorities for upcoming trail maintenance should be to improve drainage in wet spots or reroute the trail.

It's still a great place to ride, and as long as we don't get more extended periods of wet weather, I think the conditions will improve throughout the summer.
