Public service announcement:

If you were planning on a ride at the Jungle today, you might want to go elsewhere. I don't have many details but apparently there was an incident involving a bear and there is a temporary closure until this bear is located. That's all for now, more details as I get them.

thanks,
Frank

Was this an incident in the park? I heard from a news source there was a bear break-in to a W Milford home today. Mighta been the bear I saw on animal chute last weekend. He was hungry and sniffing for food.

They where just talking about the house incident on News 12, they where looking for the bear because they believe it may be injured.

folks, sorry... NJDEP called me today around 3pm and told me that there was a bear incident involving a walker and his greyhound. jungle habitat is in "temporary lockdown". no trail use until the issue is resolved (see below).

they were on one of the singletrack trails and the bear got close and there was an injury to the person and the dog. the dog is actually in pretty bad shape (he's in my wife's animal hospital up here so got first hand details) but will pull through. the man involved is ok but was mildly injured.

the bear is a category 1 bear with 2 prior complaints and will be captured. barricades have been setup and the park is temporarily closed for the public's safety. sorry folks, when we hear more we'll advise. for now please divert to one of the other area trail networks. hopefully this won't be for more than a day or two but we're just not sure.

p.s. sorry rogelio.

jd, was that a female with cubs or a solo male?

I didn't stop to check out the genitalia. hehe. I crack me up.

The bear was solo, no sign of cubs around. But I wouldn't know how to tell the sex from just looking at it.

Funny man. So many backspaced replies that will never make it here. haha.

Cool. Anyway, mainly wondering about the cubs... if you didn't see them, that's all I wanted to know. basically that means that the female with 3 small cubs *might* not be the problem bear. that's good news.

Just wondering why a man and his dog having a run in with a bear is not reported.Yet a bear breaking through a house door is reported on nj news 12.Anyway I wish the man and his dog a speedy recovery.

My mind was already going a million miles an hour before I read the next reply 😀

On a slightly related note, how are they able to to determine that one specific bear is having run ins with multiple people?

I told Jeff we should've tagged the bear, but he wanted no part of it.

anyway no worries 😀 small change of plans (bike & gear loaded 😉)

I hope the dog and its owner have a speedy recovery

btw...what is a Category 1 bear?

My guess is troublesome bears are tagged in the ear with each tag indicating a single incident. We had a two-tagged bear wander around the house last week, presumably looking for grub. My cats went crazy and hid except one guy who growled at the bear.

From what I'm told, bears with 2 tags are destroyed or relocated if reported again but can't confirm this -

Bear and dog run ins are not infrequent in these parts. The common saying I've heard from a lifelong Sussex Co neighbor is "A dog will start it; the bear will finish it." My conjecture is the dog and bear got into it and the walker tried to stop it. Hopefully everyone will pull through alright.

BTW, is JH open? I've been planning all week to ride today
