Look over there!!!
If can chime in from the nose bleed seats...
Week 1: La Chouffe - I dont think there is a beer they make that I dislike.
Week 2: Tripel Karmeliet - The beauty (but danger) of this beer is that it doesnt drink like a high abv beer. You could easily have two or three and before you know it...Whoops! :drooling:
River Horse is a great offering and I do enjoy it but it does not finish as some of the more traditional tripels do.
Week 3: OOOO this is tough! I love the both of these! I think the Chimay may have been my first entry into the Trappist game. The wonderful fruity esters from the yeast balanced with malt sweetness set the standard for the style of strong dark ales IMO. Allegash Black is no slouch either. Good roasty and chocolate notes meld nicely again with the bouquet of flavor Belgian yeast can provide.
By the skin on my chinny chin chin I give Chimay the nod.
Week 4: Another close one! Although some of the selections not be an apples to apples comparison by style guidelines they are awesome and certainly will have you staring at the shelves in the beer aisle for quite some time!
Saison Dupont is dead balls on tru to style IMO when it comes to a Saison. What makes a saison a saison is the yeast. It was a beer that was brewed on the farms with what was on hand at the time. So really there are not to many boundaries when it comes to this style. You will see all kinds of crazy stuff in a saison. Crazy spices, fruits and vegetables are used. I enjoy those that are brewed with flavors that accompany the yeast profile as opposed dominating the front of your palate.
BUT its also hard to argue with Lost Abbey as well. Still very much a great example of a Saison. It is a little more "funky" which will give you those barnyard "horsey" type flavors. Something to get used and not for everyone from what I have learned.
Im sorry I have been M I A and I suck (Norm agrees) but glad to come back and see this!
I dunno when the next MTBNJ gathering is going to be that I can attend but Id be willing to serve up one of my belgian style ales!
