Belgian beer shootout thread

These are getting pricey.

Shite, already bought one of each based on original post 🙄 :
Saison/Farmhouse - Lost Abbey Red Barn
OR Biere de Garde - Lost Abbey Avant Garde

and a 12 oz DuPont. The Bard and I have some drinking to do.

I prefered the Lost Abbey.

Both were tasty with thick foamy lacing and identical in color but I felt the American was spicier and had more character.

Saison DuPont vs Lost Abbey Red Barn and Lost Abbey Avant Garde

To start, Steve and I had the DuPont and the Red Barn. Both of us really liked the fruity touch to the DuPont. The Red Barn was good, and if that was all we drank we would have been happy. The Red Barn has a slight hopiness ending where the DuPont has a very noticeable fruity presence. The DuPont would make a most excellent summer beverage.

The Avant Garde is a bit more malty and a more subtle hopiness.

Then Steve had the Avant Garde and declared that his favorite. I liked it a lot!

I am voting for the DuPont and my wife agrees. We both like the smoothness of the beer and the fruit.

Another vote for Saison DuPont. Tasted all around better to me. They both had a nice head and lacing with lots of typical tiny bubbles. I liked the flavor of the DuPont more and think it finished better. The lost abbey seemed like it was missing something and finished too sweet.

I'm still in here, but probably won't get my vote in until Friday night.
Going to wait to be snowed in before cracking dueling bombers.

So tried these two last night- what better to drink during a blizzard than a couple of summer beers?
My vote goes for the Dupont.
That is as tasty a beverage as I remembered.
The Red Barn shared the overall profile, but wasn't as good as the Dupont.
It had a crazy barnyard nose to it, and lots of texture to the flavor,
but ultimately came through a bit thinner in the taste, sharper with a bit more bite to it.
Not sure if this is by design, but I preferred the Dupont which had a fuller more balanced taste, with a nice (but not too) bready sweet finish.
Dupont is just tough to beat as a saison.

Look over there!!!

If can chime in from the nose bleed seats...

Week 1: La Chouffe - I dont think there is a beer they make that I dislike.

Week 2: Tripel Karmeliet - The beauty (but danger) of this beer is that it doesnt drink like a high abv beer. You could easily have two or three and before you know it...Whoops! :drooling:
River Horse is a great offering and I do enjoy it but it does not finish as some of the more traditional tripels do.

Week 3: OOOO this is tough! I love the both of these! I think the Chimay may have been my first entry into the Trappist game. The wonderful fruity esters from the yeast balanced with malt sweetness set the standard for the style of strong dark ales IMO. Allegash Black is no slouch either. Good roasty and chocolate notes meld nicely again with the bouquet of flavor Belgian yeast can provide.

By the skin on my chinny chin chin I give Chimay the nod.

Week 4: Another close one! Although some of the selections not be an apples to apples comparison by style guidelines they are awesome and certainly will have you staring at the shelves in the beer aisle for quite some time!

Saison Dupont is dead balls on tru to style IMO when it comes to a Saison. What makes a saison a saison is the yeast. It was a beer that was brewed on the farms with what was on hand at the time. So really there are not to many boundaries when it comes to this style. You will see all kinds of crazy stuff in a saison. Crazy spices, fruits and vegetables are used. I enjoy those that are brewed with flavors that accompany the yeast profile as opposed dominating the front of your palate.

BUT its also hard to argue with Lost Abbey as well. Still very much a great example of a Saison. It is a little more "funky" which will give you those barnyard "horsey" type flavors. Something to get used and not for everyone from what I have learned.

Im sorry I have been M I A and I suck (Norm agrees) but glad to come back and see this!

I dunno when the next MTBNJ gathering is going to be that I can attend but Id be willing to serve up one of my belgian style ales!
