Brendan Byrne 40-Mile Epic Ride

Jim McCabe will be leading a 40-mile ride in Brendan Byrne on February 7, 2026. Riders will meet at the BTB office at 8AM. This is a great opportunity to get a fantastic overview of all that Brendan Byrne has to offer in a single ride that will also test your stamina, sense of humor, and bike ownership (A few people have been known to put their bikes up for sale immediately after doing one of Jim's rides!). I predict that this year's 40-miler is going to be epic. Jim's rides are like a box of chocolates: You never know what you're gonna get. It is usually a mixture of marked and unmarked traisl; the unmarked trails (worn fire cuts, old and current dirt bike trails, deer paths, etc.) are the secret sauce of these rides. This is real deal Pinelands mountain biking. I'd be surprised if there is anyone else out there who can connect the wide variety of trails in Brendan Byrne the way Jim does. The rides are generally at a relaxed pace, but the pace will be steady throughout the entire ride.

Definitely interested. I did some of my first mtn bike rides there with the Outdoor Club of South Jersey around 35 years ago. Do you know if the "poker run" loop is still there? I remember that section was really fun.

I have not heard of the "poker run" loop, but a lot of what we'll be riding is really fun, at least in my way of looking at things.

The outdoor club got old. All that stuff is gone. They’re all working on their E bikes.

The Outdoor Club didn't create the "poker run" loop. From what I remember, it was originally routed by some moto riders. I seem to recall that it looped around an old quarry, but I don't see anything that looks like that on Google Maps. But after 30+ years, I would imagine nature has reclaimed the clearing. It wove through the trees going up and down very old mining tailings.

We will ride at 2 pits on the 40. Come on down!

Hoping to make it. I've been wanting to get back there for a while to see how much of it comes back to me. I remember riding some of the fire cuts and since they were also ridden by motos, they would get whooped out and the trail was basically a long, straight pump track.
