Brendan Byrne Fall Ride

Jim is leading a ride in Brendan Byrne Forest on Saturday, September 26, at 9am from the office. 20+ miles. Fat bikes or plus size tires are not mandatory but highly recommended.

This is another great opportunity to get a good sampling of what Brendan Byrne State Forest has to offer, without having to commit to a 40-mile ride. Sandman has mastered a huge network of unmarked trails that he can mix and match for his many varied rides. I ride almost every Wednesday with him and I am continuously impressed by the different rides he puts together. The ride on September 26 is going to feature some of his best segments stitched together. And the trails he will be using for this ride, although a bit wild and woolly, should be in very good shape because we have been working on them over the last month on our Wednesday rides.

Technically the surface of all the trails in the Pine Barrens is sand, but there are varying degrees of "sandiness." Much of the single track, if not recently ridden by motorbikes, gets fairly packed and firm. The trails down at Batsto are a good example of how nice sand trails can be. Rainfall can firm up the trails, long dry spells can loosen things up. For the first ten years or so, I was riding mainly in the Pines on 2" tires and I don't remember it being horrible. Still, fat or plus tires do make riding in the Pine Barrens more enjoyable.

Thought it was all pine needles and sharp pointy things that can poke 1" holes in your tire and make you walk 4 miles before somebody can come back and pick you up ! OOOhhh so F'N good times !

Oh, yes. I know all about Jims rides. He has gotten more tolerant in the latter years. He actually cut a ride short, not long ago.

Interested since the last time I rode there was over 35 years ago. Where is the start point? Way back then, we met at Pakim Pond.
