Same story as 2/28/2010

We wont be riding here until April!!! and that is if we don't get any more snow.

There must be about 2 feet, deeper in some places.

Top lot is not plowed yet and neither is the bottom one. Same for the road to the ruins.

Only one section of road to the house at the bottom of lake is plowed and it goes to the road that intersects cannonball and takes u to Skyline dr.

BTW...Following Woody's inspiration from very early this year or last year, I tried snowboarding the pipeline and white and it was a total FAIL!!! Snow was too soft and I just kept sinking in...I guess I am only used to boarding in East Coast ice!

Here are some pics.

Snowboarding with ski poles? Are you trying to start a new trend? ;)

Thanks for the trail report, as dismal as it sounds.

1/15/11 Update!

Still lots of snow on the trails. Not so much snow as to justify the snowshoes I took them off half way. But still a lot to go for a ride. Some trails like Yellow (from the Lake up to the Road) are getting packed, perhaps slow ans steady possible riding here. But I didnt scope all trails. Took white all the way up.

Lake frozen with about 2-6" (depending on area) of soft snow. A couple of ice fishermen today.

Conditions of Cannonball August 28 2011

I hiked a little up Cannonball from Pool Hollow Rd. Oakland and Pompton Lakes are in bad shape. Most of the trail is a stream, waterfall, swamp or river. The Ramapo has made its usual mess of the towns it runs through. Overall the trail has a couple of down trees, but wasn't that bad of shape. I would guess maybe next weekend it could be ridden if it stays dry.
Some pictures of the trail and the river area.

Thanks. I can't imagine what Ringwood looks like. That park seems to have waterfalls all over after a good storm, let alone a hurricane.

Thanks Pete.
Gotta stay away from below 287 for a long time!
Hopefully all the sun next week will dry things up for the weekend.

Please be good enough to report hazardous conditions or downed trees blocking any trails to rvcc@jorba.org . It will probably take weeks for us to check all the trails. We may be starting cleanup on Thursday if conditions allow.

Thanks

Ramapo was great today. I got out late (9:00AM) and ran into plenty of leaf gawkers and dog walkers. It is that time of year.

isn't it a shame they only walk dogs in the fall:hmmm:

i want to give this place a second chance, the first time(3 years ago) i didn't find many trails worthwhile

I'd suggest to start at the soccer fields and work your way up to the ruins and then back. Then again it is what I am used to; start low, work high and then cruise down.
Barbara Dr in Pompton Lakes is the soccer field and start of Cannonball.

What's the trail like from the beginning of Cannonball up to TOS as compared to the red/yellow trail on the other side of skyline heading towards Ringwood?

bottom part of Cannonball (below 287) is 'wider', with rocks in some areas and it accumulates water, so it is usually wet.slick.muddy after the rain. (nothing that is un-rideable, but some people don't like wet rocks or mud or don't like to ride trails when they can be damaged). It is mostly uphill, but nothing to be scared about. It starts with a steep short switchback and then it flattens out a bit only to have another 2 or 3 short steep sections. It is a bomb to fly down on your way back to the car (just beware of the occasional hiker or slow rider)

Once you get to the LAke, it is a fireroad around the lake and then you can go up to TOS by Yellow or Cannonball, which are both singletrack fun rocky trails.

You will be climbing most of the way up to TOS. but again, it is worth for the descent.

Enjoy.
