The cat 3 results were posted as I was leaving, attached is the 40-49 field (sorry crappy bb camera could not fit the whole thing in one shot)

I was torn over the shorter cat3 distance and was on the cusp of upgrading to cat2 simply to ride a longer distance. The problem is, I know I am a cat3 racer(at best) so while I can make the cat2 distance without any trouble, I cannot do it at a race pace(race pace being relative to my fitness level here). In fact, I doubt I have tried to go hard for 5 or so miles before today. So I opted to go Cat3, I think it was the right call. I went hard(again, hard being relative) for the entire loop and finished 7th out of 15 in 40-49, A big jump up from my first cat3 race where I finished 11 out of 12 in the same group at the leaf blower in the fall.

Overall a great event, good call by the organizers on the shorter distance for cat3, I think this will work to bring more people in who normally would not consider doing this.

Kudos to Black Bear for getting the course in shape after the rain, the little rock bridge they built right at the end of red dot before the first of the two bridges was much needed, that little hole they filled in is way deep and does not look like it. Although it did eliminate my home trail advantage(I knew to stay hard right in the water there, most first timers would opt to stay left because of the trees and bushes and get bogged down)

EDIT: Sorry, the picture is garbage, I should have previewed before posting. I will try and fix it and re-post

Thanks for posting the cat 3 results guys.

Man I love this shit! The H2H at Wayway was greatly improved this year with 2 laps for cat 1's. Plus the early start times and combining the cat 1 & 2 results was a good idea. It was a good way to tighten up the day, it didn't feel like a ghost town after the cat 1 race which in the past didn't go off until 1:00.

I got 10th out of 24 which I'm happy with, I'll recap in Midpack when I get a chance.

Keep checking back here for more pics of the post race, as always I'll put them up here 1st.

Congrats to Mike Merrit, Mtbnj's Utah Joe and Brian Sherence. I must say Mike has his victory pose down.

Alex Cortale represented Mtbnj well with her 3rd place finish, congrats!

Pearl is always talking or smiling. Looking at this pic with Kirt it looks like the course put a hurtin on JP.

But these guys looked like they had fun. A rare Marc Lewis sighting with Chris Chillin and Mitch.

Great course and great race black bear gang....good times. Agree with Iggy...the crowd at the finish was awesome. In cat 1 you get used to sound of crickets after lap 1. This was a nice change.

Man that second lap hurt!

Nice work everyone!!

The early times and putting the Cat 1 and 2 out there the times was awesome. I hope the other venues can do something similar. (Jungle Cat 1 goes off at 10:30 which is cool too.)
It was just nice to have everybody wrap up around the same time and there was a nice little party atmosphere (minus the BEER) I bet a food vendor would have done well today with all those people hanging out.

I'm in the same position with Cat 3/Cat 2. I decided to stick with Cat 2 as I'm not driving 2 hours to race 45 minutes. It turns out my finishes have been roughly the same (midpack to lower half). I think the lines are a little blurred between 3 and 2 since the Cat 3 races are almost a sprint distance.

Just some food for thought.

Congratulations Utah and Brian, and the rest of the people I don't know too. I'd have like to hang out and reconnect with a bunch of people but I had to run since I'm travelling today (just about to board my plane). Maybe I'll see you in JH next week.

For me it wasn't a good day; first DNF of any race, any sport. Anyway, someday it had to happen. I decided to go at the last minute, so much that I got to the start just after the SSers had left. Pedaled hard and started to catch glimpses of the back on the road. About a half mile into the ST I could hear some riders but then a rock slit my rear tire all the way to the thread. I put a tube and a double carton the size of a credit card (CPR instructions that I carry with me 😱) to try to keep the tube from bubbling out and continued (after being passed by a lot of Cat 2 riders. A quarter mile down after that the tube blew out and that was it. I'd have run the rest if it was the 2nd lap; what I had left was just too much and I'd have bothered a lot of people in ST so I called it a day.

Good to be back tough. I had fun for the 20 min or so that I raced 🙂

Big thanks to Mike for spending way too much time making sure I was OK after I crashed! (As well as Robin who I yelled at through my tears to keep going)

There were some of the nicest people out there racing today. I'm pretty sure every single person that passed me asked if I was okay... fast guys and all. Reminds you how awesome the mountain bike community is! Thanks to you all 🙂

Glad you weren't to hurt mandi...I was seriously about to ask you how you were doing when I passed...then I crashed in the same spot 🙂

Oh and sorry Robin for calling you Patty, and Sorry Jenny for calling you Alex...stars were about the only thing I was seeing clearly

Don't feel bad Utah, Jenny called me Normie on the course. I was looking for her later to put some moves on her...would this be wrong?

congrats,joe!
and congrats to all of racers who survive these brutal race.

and this is my kind of way having fun.
ride to race venue 82miles...
race for 18mile...
i had so much fun today, enough not to ride my bike for another week.

my recap was:
racing with my rigid stupidsinglespeed (SS Cat 1. not the fast one,i'm the slowest one😀)
stay in the back the whole time just having fun riding trails.

endo 2times

my front wheell hit a tree, when going downhill and manage to slow down the speed,so it doesn't hit that hard (my fork bent inside, luckily i know how to reverse the bent)

cramping but not so serious.

only 100miles.

You're welcome Mandi. There's no way my conscience would let me just ride off. I hope you're feeling better, I'm glad that you managed to ride out. Yer a tough lil' cookie.

Everyone out there was super cool about passing & getting passed. It was pretty greasy out there, I don't think I walked so many sections in a race.
