Talk to me about Harrisonburg. Long weekend ideas.

Have passes to Massanutten. Could a 130:130 bike handle it?

Any suggestions or routes?

Subscribed. I want to do this too but way out of date on local trail access. Flagpole Knob to Rawley Springs was always epic, and Second Mountain was too (but there may be access issues with that last one).

I’ve been there twice but only on the non -DH western side of the ridgeline. Both trips were more XC centered. Last was about 2 years ago. We did a Massanutten / Carvins cove trip and stayed in Massanutten resort in an Air B&B. A lot of trail work was going on there while we were visiting. That side is similar to CR so a 130/130 is perfect. On weekends they do a truck shuttle service to the top of the ridgeline but it’s not really necessary. Town has a cool bike shop - Shenandoah bike co, with a coffee / beer section. Jimmy Madison’s had some great BBQ. Sorry no direct info on the DH park.

There's another thread here:

And this is something I dug out of my old DMs to someone:

Hey,

I did 2 rides down there. 1 in Massanuttin:

1 in GW Forest:

Gordon lives down there. Check out his Strava profile for lots of stuff:

LMK if I can answer any questions.

Also of the non-biking realm:

1. Black Sheep coffee - very good coffee and very good food. Easy to get to/park, and very open space to hang out.
2. Grilled Cheese Mania!

I went down there four years ago and was not impressed at all. The DH park was very small and had the slowest lift I ever sat on. It was super hot and almost too humid to ride, so I just didn't have a good experiece. I stayed at the resort and never ventured into town. But, with all that said, I think I read that they have done some significant improvements since then. This was back when I had my enduro bike, but if memory serves me, you will be fine on the Furtado.

Echoing @Norm and @xc62701. Go West. Did Massanutten West on my 100mm Scalpel back in '20. If I had my 130/120 Pivot T429, it would have been awesome. We only hit a few of the trails in the network.

All of the GWNF stuff is nearby too, Stokesville is a 45 min drive from Massanutten and has endless awesome trails

Just in case you wanted decent bagels while there, MR J's has 2 locations that I used to go to when I lived in the area almost 2 years ago. At the time, they did have Taylor Ham too! I also loved Vito's Pizza pie, their margarita was as close to NJ as I could find. A little further was Dr. Ho's Humble pie, it had cool combos and was very good/well liked by my NJ family who came, but not traditional Italian. I lived in Nellysford for 2.5 years and loved every minute of it but being close to family became more important and move back to the northeast, not NJ but the Poconos...

I hit up Mr. J's two months ago while doing the NC/NJ trip. It has the feel of a NJ/NY bagel shop when you walk in. While I don't think it's NJ/NY quality it definitely hits the spot if you don't live in the Northeast.

Been going down in May for the better part of the last decade.

Def ride western slope side of the mass. If you go on the weekend they run shuttles if you want to smash the quarantine enduro trail over and over. There some other good chunky trails off the top as well. 130/130 is no prob. I usually bring my enduro rig but I also ride in Bryce Bike park -

You’re only 45mins from it if you want to mix some flow w/your natural trails.
