Has anyone stitched a sidewall tear?

On my ride yesterday I destroyed a sidewall on a tire with 29 miles on it. I was riding an area that was relatively easy compared to my normal wildcat gnar. Shockingly this is my first sidewall tear ever... I was able to put a tube in with some cardboard to hold it together for the ride back to the parking area. I would try to warranty it from Maxxis but it is already a warranty replaced tire...
The stitching method look pretty easy to do. Has anyone had success with this method? If so how long did it last?

I did in my front tire last year in Wildcat got home and stiched it up with heavy thread and shoe goo. So far its held up.

I bet if you stitched it and used gorilla tape on the inside it would seal. But personally I wouldn’t want the liability of having to mess with it in the future, especially in the woods during a ride.

That's my main concern... I was in a race against time last night to get my tube in before dark in an area I have never ridden. That reminds me I should add a flashlight to my pack...

Stitch it closed with some sort of plastic thread or make a zipper with zip ties seal the inside with radial patches

I patch a tire loaned to me by @BPaze that held up file with the patch and no ties but you are going to want to hold a gap that size together

If anyone remembers when Racing Ralphs first came on the 29er scene they came in 2.4 version with paper thin side walls. I sliced the front at CR and used a Park Tool tire patch. It last all summer riding rocks. I had to use a tube though because I don't think they hold up to sealant- someone chime in if I'm off on that.

Maybe try one of those darts from Stans?

you could try stitching it then putting a big patch over all of it...biggest issue with fixing a sidewall tear is that the tear just keeps on tearing...i have had luck with car tire plugs and gorilla glue, but not a tear that big. Try they thread, see if it works...works...worst case, you will be walking home.

I guess 2 bucks a mile isn't too bad of a deal for a tire... The first one I got warrantied right out of the box because the tread had about a half inch wobble to it.

Idk if a tire has 2 miles on it anything more than a plug then its dumpster time. I also hoard tires so I look for any excuse to try new ones .

For sure you should put a claim in for warranty. All the tire brands build in a certain amount of warranties into their base margin
I spend at least ten hours a week working on claims for customers. I very rarely get turned down.

Does maxxis warranty a single purchase multiple times?

Hutchinson makes a patch kit that is basically super glue and motorcycle tube patches. I've successfully repaired sidewall tears like that with motorcycle patch kits. Clean the inside of the tire with brake cleaner first (breath deeply), then it's the same protocol as repairing an inner tube. That said, the tire is nearing the end of it's life.

I've stitched with fishing line with success. You want something thick enough to resist wear, but thin enough to be flexible and not break at the bends. I bought some giant sewing needles meant for leather on Amazon. Reinforce with Shoe Gu on the outside and a patch on the inside. Good as new(ish).

This was my front maxis recon I stitched up last year.. this thread made me go out and look at it.. looks as though the stitches have given out.. but what I did was stitch it 1st then used a large patch on the inside then shoe goo over the stitches.. tire hold air completely but definitely not looking so hot anymore.. I think it’s heading to the ?soon
