10 year old ikea bed and matress. Upgraded to a king size casper mattress. So far so good.
I'll make a headboard next. Have one more 2x8 already stained and sealed. Just need to make up rights for it. 2x6 or 2x8. Not sure yet.

use balusters and newel posts - home depot special!
some simple tenon and blind mortise and you are good to go....

I don't have a box spring, so it's also got a plywood top. I took 2 pieces of 3/8" plywood from my MIL's garage when we moved. Turns out, they must have been from an old king sized bed, because they were cut EXACTLY to dimensions to fit in there. Explains why they even had a piece of plywood at the house.
 
Also, this is how the chickens are eating because they refuse to touch the snow. Maria hung cages with lettuce in there so they can get some greens while they can't get to any plants for a while.
