Idaho Stop Law-NY

I'm sure a lot of us ride the roads throughout NY so I wanted to pass this along. NYS Safe Streets Coalition has requested that the cycling community reach out to NY State legislators to advocate for the inclusion of Stop as Yield bill in this session. Details below.

Fellow Cyclist,

This week, lawmakers in Albany are meeting to decide which bills will move forward this session. So we need you to make three quick calls to Senate and Assembly Leadership to support Stop as Yield (Idaho Stop) S639 | A7071 which would let cyclists treat red lights as stop signs, and stop signs as yields. Here's the one-pager.

Back Story: In April 2025, the New York City Police Department (“NYPD”) began handing out criminal summons to cyclists for traffic violations. Sadly, NYC cyclists have long been singled out for enforcement, getting ticketed seven times as often as motorists. Black and brown cyclists in particular have been targeted. No cyclist should be subjected to aggressive enforcement (tasers!) and the criminal justice system for safe, predictable cycling behavior.
