James Pearl Thinks Blogging is Dead

This Time with Julia

In keeping with my theme of buying local, I went back to Black River today to buy some toilet paper. It turns out they do not, in fact, sell toilet paper, and I had to settle for some coffee. This time, Julia came out with me and we hung out and had coffee together. For reasons unknown, I didn't get a picture of the 2 of us. So you get this coffee cup as evidence. It's a nice enough coffee cup but I don't like it enough to buy one.

This was actually Julia's idea; I mean the coffee, not the toilet paper. The reality is that we have enough toilet paper to last through Q2, so we won't need to cross that bridge for a little bit. She asked if we could go get some coffee. This is something we've been doing on & off for a year or 2 now. We go to a shop, I buy a pour over, she gets a latte of some sort, and we sit in the shop and talk. It's one of those pure daddy-daughter times that I am getting less and less of now that she lives in Ohio much of the year.

I guess I should mention she's home for spring break, as is Zac. More on that in another post for another day.

Anyway, this was my afternoon. Got to spend a few hours with the kiddo, which is a nice bonus for a random Wednesday afternoon. I took the next 2 days off work to spend with her before she flies back on Saturday. So I suspect we'll have a few more coffees together before the week is out.

Being able to walk places is nothing short of magical. Getting into a car for a 3 minute drive is the absolute worst.
Yeah I miss living in Morristown where I could walk around downtown easily from my house. But at least I'm on a suburban street that's walkable and the bike/walking path that goes into town and the national forest is at the end of my street.

Of course I have the I'm not retired yet problem where I end up driving into town during the day because walking/biking takes up too much time.

Walk-ability doesn't seem like something people look at when buying houses. Most modern houses are setup in locations where you basically need to get in the car to do anything. Guess I can say also that most modern shopping centers are designed to arrive by car.

A New Parenting

The kids were both home for spring break this week and it was like event week from last Friday to this morning. We had anywhere from 1 to 4 kids in the house for the week, having only a single night with nobody here. We did a lot of dinners, going out, spending time together, and trying to make the most of it. We found that when dinner was done, they would want to sit at the table and actually talk for a bit before they ran away to play video games. We even played a few card games this week. It was nice.

I now know what the grandparents feel like when the world descends on them for 5-7 days around the holidays or in the summer. The food bill quadruples. You use every dish you have in the house. It is a constant stream of making food, then cleaning up that mess. And when it's all done for the day you can actually just sit back on the couch and relax a little bit, feeling like you really did earn it.

That said, I'm good with this week being over. All of this adds up, and we're both tired. Zac left this morning so now it's business as usual. We walked this dog this afternoon and it was a pretty low key walk, neither of us having a lot to say because I think we're both tapped out. It was nice, don't get me wrong. But I think we're both looking forward to a quiet week, in as much as any week is quiet for us around here.

Don't get me wrong, the summer will be fine with them home. But we won't be in a mad rush to spend every available hour with someone, trying to get the most out of everything. Of course, when that rolls around it'll be the fun process of getting them both jobs. I don't look forward to that.

With that, I will leave you with the text that Julia just, and I mean just now sent me. "Can you send money please."

Gotta love having the crew home -

I hear ya - Vin had his roommate here, and they mostly hung around the house. Couple of friends over late night.
They cooked a couple nights, we cooked the others - so that was fun.
We went to AC for a couple days, so it was interesting hanging with the kid at roulette and blackjack.
He took money home (data analytics major), his roommate did not (marketing major) - probably just luck. (meaning that both didn't lose, cause that is the odds)
To dial it back, we are now watching golf. shhhh! ahhh.

That is a cool little table lamp - gotta find them for outside!

Looks like Pooja. This is a good reminder that I need to get back there, it's solid!

Pooja, correct.
This was a combined birthday dinner as both will be at school for their actual birthdays.
Julia likes sushi.
Zac likes Thai.
They both like Indian.

It was dinner so no buffet. Indian buffet is 1 of the 4 most dangerous things on the planet.

On the wallet or the plumbing?
