Just a rant on these stupid ass shifters. Why the hell do the even exist !!!! And on a kids bike ! My youngest is ten riding a 24 incher with these dumb shifter it's even hard for me to shift it. I've tried everything to make the shifting easier.....Nope still the same !!!! I know I know just change it to a normal shifter and a new detailer while I'm at it. That's not the point, the shifters suck balls on kids bikes, un less your spending a lot on it. But I'm not spending a crap ton on a bike he's going to out grow by next season.
HUNNY WE HAVING A BON-FIRE TONIGHT !

SORRY GUYS

Brand? Shimano are the lightest action (assuming all else--cables/housing/routing--equal), then SRAM, then the bottom-of-the-barrel crap Microshift/knockoff crap.

Its junk no name crap. My mom got the bike for him for birthday. I just wish she let me know before she got it.

I know there are some good one, just PO-ed bout it.

lol, my son just rides in 1st gear on his 20"...he can shift up, but cant shift back down...his has shimano shifters and they suck. I was going to rip everything off and change it to some old 9 speed stuff i had laying around, but I would have had to buy a new wheel...so im just going to wait until I get him a 24"

We had them twice. Once on the little specialized. on that I got a new one for like 15 bucks on amazon. And then on the cannondale that @Norm sold me. Honestly, they’ve both worked great with no issues. My kid shifts fine.
Sorry not bragging, lol, but did you try replacing it and the cables?

The dumpster fire brand bikes use 5mm brake cable for the shifters. Basically makes them unusable. They don't expect walmart bikes to be ridden so they design them as such. $15 shifter and cable and you're tits.

Kids Trek bikes came with them; Precaliber 24” and 20”. I switched them out for Alivio trigger after 2 rides. I was their hero.

I have had similar experience. My 7 year old is on a Specialized Rip Rock 24" and the twist shifter is fine. His old bike was a Raleigh Rowdy 20" and it shifted fine as well.
