Lake Placid

Where are you staying in the Lake Placid area? The World Cup courses were run on the XC skiing trails of Mt Von Hoevenberg, so probably not a lot of ST.
my friend's friend's condo which is right in town somewhere (not sure where).

Can't imagine you'll be disappointed riding Craig Wood (10 min drive from downtown, or bike from Lussi Loggers via Jackrabbit trail) and Hardy Road (25 mins away). Both have super flowy fast sections as well as chunkyness. Plenty of variety, and all the big bad scary looking drops have bypasses so nothing mandatory.

The old bike park trails at Whiteface (20 mins away) were just natural fall line stuff, of the double black and up variety. In recent years they've added some machine built green and blue trails. I haven't been there w/ these additions so can't say how good, but always an option to get the lift up gravity down.

Lussi and Loggers (can bike straight from downtown, entrance thru golf course driving range parking lot) is a bit more 6 mile-ish w/ lots of smaller ups and downs. There is one section w/ 3 different loops that gets more techy and climbs quite a bit.

Been a while since I hit Flume (20 mins) but I think I remember that being fun.

Pisgah (further than all of these, don't remember how far) is supposed to be pretty good, but never made it there (yet).

The stuff at Hoevenberg (15 mins) sledding center where the races were was a bit less exciting for me, but that was a few years ago, they may have improved.

Whiteface still runs the lift for DH? I thought they stopped a few years back. Just checked website and nothing about biking there.

Hmm, this summer they had a ton of info, trail map, etc. Wonder if bike is closed for season as they prep for winter? Would be odd to take bike info down tho? I didn't go this summer, couldn't fit it in, but was considering it.

They did stop for a while, while they were building the new trails, but they were open 2 years ago, assumed they were this summer but now not sure.

Doesn't look like Whiteface is doing DH currently. All trails shown on Trailforks show closed. Poorman's DH from the Whiteface Summit Rd will require a shuttle, but so worth it. Do some of the other Flume Trails, drive over to hit 3 Sisters and Hardy Road. All the Wilmington trail systems in 1 day.

Excellent source of trail information for that region.

Ok, so here's what we ended up doing. Decide to only do rides from the condo (Pine Hill by Lisa G's restaurant).
Day 1 was Lussi and Loggers. Nice old school techy singletrack for the most part. A little woodwork here and there. Blues were nice and cruisey but Loop 2 and 3 blacks were quite tough with tech and climbing. Cinderella Story was a cool long blue to get into the heart of the trail system with dense, mossy woods.

Day 2 was Craig Wood. Rode Cinderella Story again to get over there with a bit of road to connect. This area was definitely more new school machine built stuff. It was a bit of a slog to get there so we didnt hit a lot of it. Worked our butts off to climb Back 9 and cut over to climb Scott's Cobble to the top of the Blue Ribbon DH Flowtrail but it was kinda disappointing. Berms were good but the rollers/jumps were poorly done. We shoulda stayed on the other side and looped some of those flow/jump trails instead (though not sure they are better than Blue Ribbon but this drop looked legit - didnt send it). 19th Hole was a pretty good descent out of there but I expected more.

Day 3 it poured overnight and we had to get home so just hit the road. Definitely a cool destination for riding with so much more to check out. I plan to go back next year, probably for world cup weekend.
