Wear the tallest socks you can find and spray them down good. Don't stop and don't put your feet down until you arrive at the next sand road. The worst part of tick season (because of the nymph ticks) is mid-August to late September. Explore the sand and gravel roads to minimize tick bites during that time. Or maybe even ride the road. Last time I looked, the NJ DOT still had a map of a nice long road bike loop from Batsto.
