Mayhem MTB '26 recap thread

For many of us, this was the first mtb race of the '26 season. Please share your experience.

I'll go first. Usually not too excited about this race. But, it's close to home and good to see how the winter training went. Since it's been a shitty weather winter, most of my time was spent inside. Normally I've had a few very long Pine Barrens rides but weather, family stuff and the human GPS that puts together the rides had some surgery and was off the bike.

Raced last year in the Endurance 45+ class on the IndyFab rigid SS, which again was the plan this year, running 34x17 gearing. After bothering the promoter to add Endurance SS, it was finally added last week and there was 7 pre-reg. 2 familiar names that included @Matt_ so I knew the pace would be quick at the start. Lined up with Matt and his teammate on the left side of the start, the other familiar face Kevin Claus was on the right side of the start a few rows ahead. Once in the ST, noticed I was on Matt's teammates wheel for a bit until he pulled away sitting in what I assumed was 4th place. On the 1st or 2nd lap, had a rider pass me on the DT road on a FS Santa Cruz with a tensioner. Now I'm in 5th place. Pretty much rode alone with an occasional pass. Only remember being lapped by a few Endurance Open racers, at least the top 3. Course was pretty much the same as last year except for a new ST section that was loamy, twisty and rolling up/downs. Trail wasn't packing down the longer the race went on and sapped a bit of energy.

Did 6 laps last year and the goal with to try for a 7th this year. Doing math in my head after 4 laps, figured I could, however the body was telling me otherwise on Lap 5 when I started feeling crampy but able to pedal out of that feeling. On the 6th lap it was worse. Came into the finish gates and could see I was under the 4hr mark. With both timers cheering me on to go out for another, I slow rolled, braked before the line to let the clock run out and called it a day to their disappointment. Nutrition and hydration for the day was three 22oz bottles with 2 scoops of Perpetuem, one 20oz bottle with 1.5 scoops of Heed and a banana. Worked out well for me.

While gathering my feed area stuff, met @Hair Face and had a conversation about how our day went. Checked out results and while talking to Kevin Claus he razzed me about not going out for a 7th lap, because official time was sub 4hrs. Finished 5th of 7. Later in the evening Kevin informed me via Strava comment that I was "3rd in the AARP SS race" as 5 of 7 racers were 50+.

Got down to the YMCA camp with 45 minutes to spare, checked in, got dressed and my dropper was coming up a bit slow at the top. Hm. Maybe I needed more air, oh well. I can deal with it. Go to do a quick recon warm up on the few bridges since it rained the night prior....dead lever. Crap. 15 minutes to the start. Pull the post....still attached, so not a bad cable. It's just a blown dropper. 7 minutes to the start.

I tried to get it to clamp as high as possible but it was a bit low still. I ended up doing lap 1 standing up the entire time. Then with a mile to go the post slid down the slightly lower diameter of the lower tube and started twisting. Stopped for a minute to fix that until I could get back to my car and figure out what I was going to do. Was pretty sure this race was over... I was able to get the veryyyyyy end of the post to clamp snuggly. Don't tell Specialized lol.

Anyway, at that height it was probably 1.5-2" low still but at least I could sit a little bit to pedal. Lap 3 was Cat 3 Mayhem. So many sketchy passes, trying to not destroy children in the process. And then finally Lap 4 was a pretty solid lap. I wish I could say I was trying to negative split this race....just a comedy of errors. Snagged 3rd in the 2.5 hour open endurance. Guessing I end up 2nd without the dropper nonsense.

Race went really well for me. I decided to line up for the Endurance open for the second year in a row.

Last year I had someone crash in front of me during the prologue and stopping while everyone else was sprinting landed me in a lot of traffic during the first lap, so this year my goal was to get a clean start and get into the single track near the pointy end of the race. I decided I would risk the effort early on if need be and lined up front and to the far side for the wide line around the prologue.

Start plan went well and I was maybe 7th onto the first single track section without going so hard that I was risking trouble later on. I quickly realized the bridges were sketchy as a rider two places in front of me went down hard on the third bridge probably 5 minutes into the race.

I kept the pressure on the pedals on the singletrack but as soon as we got onto the first dirt road section, I decided to open it up a bit and made a couple quick passes to move into 5th before dipping back onto trail. Felt good and was rolling fast watching the lead group of four, trying to gauge the gap when I caught a sniper stump with my right pedal and went full yard sale. As I was dusting myself off and yelling for riders behind me to watch the stump a friend a couple places back was asking if I was alright and managed to catch the exact same stump mere seconds after me and went full yard sale right beside me. We both picked up our belongings and got rolling again. We quickly caught the riders that passed while we were laying around on course. I didn't hang around behind them for long and eventually found myself out alone for a couple of laps when I came upon one of the four from the lead group dealing with what looked like a mechanical.

Now that I knew I was in fourth I didn't want to let up for fear of being caught again. But after some time I could see two other riders slowly making ground on me. Once they caught up, I had a short chat and found out one of them was down a full lap after an early mechanical and just out putting in a fast lap and the other guy was a 45+ rider enjoying the draft. The 45+ guy wound up drafting me for the entire remainder of the race as the other guy bailed when we came through the start finish. I offered to let him around or have him lead multiple times and he declined every time. Basically, just rode my pace towing him around for the remainder of the race trying to keep things smooth.

We eventually surmised he was the 45+ leader, but I still wasn't about to let him finish ahead of me after pulling him around for the last couple of hours so I tried to create a little bit of separation towards the end while keeping close eye on him in case he attempted to sprint me😆

The bridges were definitely claiming bodies and after my finish I heard that one of the top three had also crashed out at some point and that I was in fact in third. I was pretty stoked to sneak onto the podium and overall happy with how the legs felt for the duration of the effort.

I did 7 laps and missed the 8th by about 3 minutes. I'm thinking if I hadn't crashed and had someone pushing me a little harder, I might have made the 8th along with the top two guys.

Course was a bit unpredictable early on and I spent most of my time trying to stay smooth and steady as a result, maybe should have run a slightly lower tire pressure. The loamy new ST section wasn't my favorite but will improve in time, I lost a bar end in there after grazing one of the trees at the pinch point.

Overall had a really good time and am happy with how it went.
