Need to see an Orthopedic doctor for knee pain

Turning 60 in a couple months and I have developed pain in my right knee, I suspect either arthritis or some form of tendinitis, I think the cause is from overuse of a stair climber at my gym after they canceled spin classes due to crappy bikes. I have been hitting the machines hard, 45 minutes and was getting a great workout. Maybe too good!

I've never had an issue with my knees ever and have always physically been lucky minus some Achilles issues, and the knee pain is maybe a .5 if that on a scale of 10, some days I won't feel any pain and I can go riding with it being pain free 95% or more, however I do a lot of camping and hiking and will be most definitely investing in a pair of good hiking poles.

But I still want to get a head of this, if can recommend a good orthopedic in the CNJ area (I live in Sayreville), I would greatly appreciate it.

Many skimp when buying shoes for the gym, stair climber might need shoes that are a little stiffer than running shoes?

I do wish I used better shoes, I stopped running altogether because of my Achilles (and a stubborn piriformis injury that refused to heal), so my shoes nowadays are on the less expensive side.

I’m 62 and my knees are a wasteland, ran 3 marathons, dozens of 70 mile weeks(running) and I split my knee cap in half mountain biking ( ware those knee pads kids)….to quote Indiana jones, “it’s not the years, it’s the mileage “.
Now the advice…..
Loose the hi heel shoes, get zero rise shoes. The human body was not designed to slam your heel into the ground.
Next, pay attention to how you are walking. As I got old and fat, I developed a habit heel striking on the outside of my heel. When i do this my knee starts hurting in less than a mile. When I concentrate on heel striking with the middle/inside of my heel, my knees are good for about 6 miles….. here is some knee porn

Aaaand still no recommendation. 🙄

I’m in a similar situation but closer to NNJ. I remember reading a while back about doctor referral that everyone raved about…

Anyone?

If Northern NJ Dr. Stecker. We've got frequent flyer miles there. Ankle, knee, wrist, collar bones, multiple shoulders....

That said... If the knee pain is in the front and beneath the knee cap, it could be Patella pain (aka runners knee) a simple fix is a padded strap below the knee. It's the tendon getting rubbed wrong in the front. First time I experience it was on a 600 mile multi day ride through the Rockies in colorado. For temporary relieve you can massage the tendon below the knee cap but for relief while being active you need a strap.

These work pretty well for mine.

I just went through this, you'll likely need an MRI, I went to a sports medicine doc and got X-rays and ultrasounds at his office, which didn't show obviously damage to joint, ligaments or tendons with the 2D images. Next was a MRI (no contrast), which will likely need pre-approval from your insurance, for the 3D stuff, especially under the knee cap. Though X-rays can figure out a lot, including arthritis, fractures and calcium deposits, the MRI will fill in the gaps. In the end, I didn't have anything major, but the doc wasn't able to figure out the source of the pain and concluded that it may be nerve related. Next, I'm planning to visit an ortho. Been to many for back, shoulders and hands, but not for my knees. Was previously using Tri-County Ortho, but lately Summit Health. I don't usually like to put out specific doctor names out there. But PM me if you'd like more details.

My advice for specialists is to 1) ask for referrals from (as you are doing) and then 2) find doctors affiliated with large, specialized institutions (like HSS or NYU) who then 3) further subspecialize in the particular joint and from a sports perspective.

I thought I had someone nailed down until I read he specializes in arms, hands elbows and I had to cross him off.

Some minor home renovation and automobile repair have caused me to neglect my bikes lately, and have have really angered my right knee. I've made an appointment at Rothman's Manahawkin office. Non-surgical sports specialist, Dr Chipa, it's nearly 4 weeks out.

I had been using Dr Sargent at Brielle Ortho in Lacey, he seemed competent but was convinced I was on road to replacement.
I may well be, but need another opinion.
If you already have a full knee replacement, has it affected your riding? Walking?

My wife had a robotic knee replacement 7 years ago at Thomas Jeff in Philly, it's been flawless. But it's a very invasive procedure and the medical recovery/ PT process should not be taken lightly.

I’d always suggest Scott Schoifet in the Cherry Hill area. He can do robotic knees minimally evasive work.

He has been doing minimally evasive knees surgery for over 25 years.

There is a TKR thread in here somewhere. Lots of good results.
