whats up everyone, new guy here from long island. decided to join up here after a few rides with mike (ninja) showing me a tour of ringwood, love the technical rocky terrain that jersey has to offer as well as the trails in west chester (blue and sprain), compared to the long island trails. so much so that its hard to get motivated to ride any trail on long island. i consider myself a beginner rider, ride what i can, attempt what i have the balls for, and hike a bike the stuff thats a little to "hairy" for me, have been riding long island trails for 2 years and just got into the off island riding last summer after purchasing my current bike, 2011 yeti 575. enough jibber jabber heres a pic of the ride...

Close, its a little further east at Robert Moses. Familiar with the area?

Yeah, I used to live in Nassau County till age 12. My mom used to take me to the local beaches, including Robert Moses, semi-often.

Also you may want to look into getting a 26" fully rigid, maybe even a single-speed one for Long Island. Maybe less bike will make the local trails funner and more challenging. I know it is hard to get out of Long Island to NJ during weekday afternoons with the rush hour crunch.
