Oktoberfest

I have not, but I wish it was a lot closer to me as it looks like it would be a lot of fun.

I have been to the real Oktoberfest in Munich twice, now that is a lot of fun!

Havent been in many moons, but went when I lived in Frankfurt. Arriving early is key to finding a table and obviously sharing a table is expected. I used to live on the corner of Poccistrasse and Bavariaring when I moved to Munich, which is the edge of the Theresienwiese). U3/u6 ubahn gets you to Poccistrasse from Marienplatz.

Pace yourself, the beer is stronger and count your change as the ladies tend to tip themselves after the patrons have had a few rounds. Do NOT call them Fraeulein, nor anyone for that matter.

I went to Loewenbraeu and Paulaner, which are very good (LB tastes distinctly better when not brewed by Miller). If possible, go to Franziskaner or Augustinerhaus as both are simply fantastic beers (Franziskner is purely weissbiers). They both have restaurants in town that are also nice (Augustinerhaus is just off Kronbergplatz iirc). Also give zum Duernbraeu a try as I think they actually speak English there now (they held out for a looong time on speaking something other than German) but never gave me crap for my accent 🙂 ). Last time was there, there was a table of Japanese businessmen, so they probably just overcharged them. It is located just up the street from the Isartor/Isartorplatz).

Hofbraeuhaus is a must in the statue of liberty category; everyone goes, but you honestly aren't missing much other than a bunch of us, Ozzie, and UK students and tourists.

Grab a Michelin guide or Fodors for non-traditional food as there is very good cuisine in Munich. I recommend going to the viktualienmarkt and buying stuff for a picnic or lunch. It really is excellent. there are a number of Segafredo cafe's for a coffee fix and the guys working there are typically entertaining. Bizarrely they have a Charbucks on the viktualienmarkt now, which is where the kids in love with US culture go (their parents don't understand why anyone would pay so much for coffee).

Viel spaß!
