Pliny the Younger

Has anyone ever tried Pliny the Younger? Apparently, it's topped the Beer Advocate ratings list ...

Never had it, but Pliny the Elder is outstanding ...

I've never had it either, but my opinion of the elder is that it's over rated. Don't get me wrong, it's a great beer... I just dont think it lives up to the hype.

I'd like to sample some Pliny the Younger, but I bet it's tough to come by. I've only seen the elder once or twice in a bar and it typically sells out very quickly.

I tried both on a trip last year to Colorado...I agree that the Elder is a great beer but not the best IIPA in the world IMO. The younger I thought was a better beer overall but it's even more limited than the elder to find anywhere especially on the East Coast. Only 1 distributor in East PA even gets stuff from Russian River right now.

Both have been elluding me for years. 😡

I had been hearing about Pliny the Elder for a long time before I actually found it on tap somewhere. All that hype, I was expecting something to blow my socks off... I had it built up so high in my mind that when I actually tasted it, I was like; meh. It's a great beer and I highly recommend trying it if you see it, but don't expect it to be the the holy grail that some make it out to be.

I agree. It is a good beer but it's not the very best out there. I think it may be so hyped precisely because it's hard to find. I was at a beer dinner in Bethlehem a few years ago and that was the first time I tried it, but the thing that really stuck out for me wasn't the beer itself but how well it went with the course we were being served. It was a tomato soup course and the two flavors played off of each other really nicely -- the hoppiness of the beer offset the tanginess and acidity of the soup perfectly.

Personally, I think Stone's Ruination is a better beer inthe same style (so is 90 Minute form Dogfishead, although the funny thing about that beer is that its a total 'mood beer' for me -- there are times when its all I want and other times its the last thing I want.)

Agree... I love Ruination. If it's on tap somewhere, that's what I'm drinking. Dogfish 90 - its good, but I rarely drink it. In fact, I used to like the 60 better than the 90... although I think the 60 has changed considerably in the past number of years - I don't really like it anymore.
