If you're training and on a structured schedule, yes it's real.

You do a super hard ride or race sunday, and have some intensity on the schedule for Tuesday or Wednesday, a light easy spin on Monday will help loosen you up for those workouts.

A good recovery drink/meal immediately after that Sunday effort also has a big impact on how you feel on the next ride.

Yes, training is a cycle(pardon the pun) of stress and recovery. Some do the recovery too hard which means the "training" part of the plan cannot be done at full intensity. My training takes in no more than 3 days of intensity before including a recovery day. Recovery is either low intensity activity (HR zone 2-active) or a complete day off if needed. Active recovery needs to be more like a warm up and then stop for the day before it becomes an endurance ride. For me, generally 30-60 minutes @ zone 2 does it. But then at 63, what do I know????
