Riding near Newark ?

Hey, I am bringing a relative to Newark Airport this weekend. I am not real familiar with the geography in that area... I was wondering if I should toss my bike in the car and try to find a trail.

I will be coming over the GWB from NYC and heading south to Newark. So I guess it would be someplace in between the two spots..is Allaire near there?

Thanks, and if anyone ever wants to cross the bridge the other way I'd be happy to show you Sprain Ridge , Cunningham ,or Stillwell. 🙂 Heidi

Allaire is 60 min. away from Newark.
Chimney Rock is 45-60 min. away(depending on traffic).

There are no close trails to Newark. If you want to adventure into NJ I would recommend heading North to Ringwood, Waywayanda or Allamuchy. These places are a good hour from Newark, but if you have to drive an hour these trails are worth checking out.
Also its good to have a trail guide at these parks, they are big and you can get lost + they can show you the good trails.

Chimney Rock is about 30 mins west just off Rt 22. Iggy drives slower than me.
Other than that, bring the road bike and hit Pine Island with me..

Panhead, even I know Pine Island isn't even close to Newark! Can you ride trails yet or only roads?

Iggy, I know how to get to the trails you mention, by Skyline or by Route 23. I was thinking newark might count as "central jersey". I will check out Chimney Rock and see if it's feasible. thanks

We gave Newark back to NYC, in the process of giving any land south of the Driscoll Bridge to Deleware.

Best way to get to Allaire from the airport is 78 west, GSP south, look for the signs, short trees, sand instead of dirt. If there is a rock, chances are its lost.

CR is 22 west. Not sure of exact exit. Check the trail directory.

No trails for a while. Road is ok as long as there arent any steep hills.

I think I can XC Ski this year, not sure on how the Doc will take that, might forget to ask. Much the same a boarding, better to seek forgiveness.

Why did you put this in first timers?

Heidi -

There MIGHT even be signnage for Rt. 22 (west) as your leaving the airport. Take the Chimney Rock Rd. exit and in about two miles you'll see a parking lot on the right.

OK, my relative wound up taking the bus, ( maybe he's heard about my driving? haha)...but thanks for the tips.

Velocity, I'll meet you at Cunningham anytime, although that is one place you never need a guide. Those trails are marked in painstaking detail. It is the kind of place that might not warrant a special trip, but if you had other business in the area, it's fun to stop by. There are some really fun man-made sections. Definitely a change of pace.

Panhead..glad you are on the mend, I guess I put the question here because it sounded kind of newbie-ish.
