Stephens Trail Build- 3/8/26- Iron Gate Trail

JORBA.ORG
Hello all!

Hope everyone stayed sane during the winter, now that the thaw is here we have exciting news for Stephens.

We have been approved by NJ State Parks to build a new trail to get all users off Kinney Road and most importantly they will be opening the iron gate for parking this coming spring. The new trail will connect across the street from Blue Rock exit to bring riders via single track to the Iron Gate, completely removing the need to ride on Kinney Rd.

Rough GPS track:

Stephens trail Build Sunday March 8th at 10:00AM.

We will be parking on Kinney Rd and access to the trail is feet from the road.

Please bring water, comfortable shoes and loppers if you have them. We will be doing the initial vegetation cut back for the trail before anything starts to grow in. This will be the first of several dig days for this new trail which spans roughly 2000 feet. It's going to be a very unique terrain to build on!

We will have bagels for those who RSVP so we know how many tools to bring!

Please RSVP: mattb@jorba.org and sign the JORBA waiver prior to arrival:

Please check this thread for trail news and cancellations

Thanks in advance for your support!

Matt

Great plan! Easy to get to the build site and would be easy to bring machinery or loads of dirt/rock/gravel in there if needed/allowed. There's a nice dirt ridge/spine in there which will be cool. Would be nice to continue the "character" of the Blue Rock trail.

I love that the NICA racecourse is burnt into the grass on that sat photo.

NICA teams will be out in force for this build. It's a huge upgrade from two way traffic on Kinney Rd during the event, and a great addition to get folks off of the road year round.

Huge kudos to @Cassinonorth and all of the JORBAns involved in the extensive and often overlooked behind the scenes work to make this happen. JORBA membership funds and advocacy work in action!

I will be there for sure. We will have a bunch of NICA kids in attendance. With this in mind we will need many watchful eyes to make sure the kids are staying safe.

I flagged this route on wed and it is about 50% snow covered, but after a few days of warm rain, we may be all dirt.

anyone going to be there on Saturday? If j dog flagged it already, route is already chosen and corridor needs to be cut that needs to be cut should be obvious, correct?

While I appreciate the sentiment, please do not start clearing corridor until we get out there. Although we are partially flagged there will be adjustments I prefer to be there to make decisions on.

That and our disclosure to the park on when work will be happening. It would be a bad look to start early, especially without the chapter head there who is versed in the land management review's guidance/limitations for the project. Awesome to see the interest though!
