Tariffs...what to make of them.

I've been doing some reading and not sure what DJT is trying to accomplish. He says the war on trade is the war on drugs but is it? Why only 10% on China where the fentanyl comes from? maybe because Elon would lose too much money then? I'm glad I'm locked into a 5 year union contract because who knows what salaries will be after this is said and done. What companies will benefit the most and worse from this? BTW, went to Home Depot today and hardwood flooring(all of it comes from Canada) jumped 25% Friday night. Is DJT trying to make Detroit great again by manufacturing cars here? What is his end goal?

He has no idea what he’s trying to accomplish, he's like a toddler throwing a tantrum. People will still pay 10% over for Chinese goods because the american alternative is probably 200% more. The government will just pocket that 10% tariff and stiff the little guy. His fanbase is too dumb to see they're getting shafted.

We as consumers need to just be more selective in what we buy. There's really no other way to approach it. In the end, most people have X dollars to spend. If you can buy 9 things this week instead of 10, that means 10% of the businesses in this country will need to go under to support this.

Keep an eye on prices. This is also just another opportunity for middlemen to make more money. If a product now costs them $5 more, they will charge $7 more. We've seen this with price increases on things we have subscribed via Prime. D got an email yesterday saying the price of the vitamins she takes have gone up 66% and 50%, respectively. She cancelled the order.

DJT and Heil Elon are scum-sucking morons, no doubt. But the middlemen crying foul are also a bunch of scamming dirtbags too.

As someone who has worked in the manufacturing sector for way too long, agree with @stb222 , some will never come back. You don't just start making things here overnight. Skilled workers are already hard to find. The manufacturing equipment is made in China to make the manufactured goods in China, Canada, Europe, and the U.S. Agree this isn't going to go well.

I’m sure DJT and Naziboy have carefully considered the following questions, while simultaneously keeping the best interests of our citizens foremost:

What will happen to all of the moneys collected as tariffs?
Will we ever see an accounting on this not insignificant dollar amount?
Will it be used on something quantifiable, perhaps to offset my federal income tax bill, or reduce the US debt, next year?

I can tell you it will not be used to reduce fentanyl importation or illegal immigration.

I don’t need to know how tremendous it’s going to be. Just show me the money- especially as it relates to what benefit there is to my family paying some arbitrary percent more (or worse as others have mentioned) on many things.

don't you think it is just a short-term leveraging strategy?

What happened to NAFTA and USMCA ?
"we changed our minds" ?????

@Norm, do you file for a return of VAT, GST, HST after going to Canada?

GST is a funny one - we kinda do the same thing.
If I purchase tile at HD, even with a reseller certificate, the tile is doing what it is made to do, so I'm charged tax,
then when I bill the customer I charge them tax on the material (second tax for this) plus tax on the labor.
In some cases I can avoid the double tax if I line item the supplies, and don't upcharge.
There is also the ST-8 to make an improvement tax exempt - use this sparingly, esp if only some of the project is exempt.....

Will be used to offset the soon to be coming tax cuts for the ultra wealthy. Just make more money and you'd be good.

Billionaires deregulating the Government and breaking up or closing the controlling agencies to create chaos. While everybody is looking at shit show and pointing fingers, transfer of wealth from poor and lower middle class will increase.

The key problem with this is the word, "Strategy."

The first definition of the word that comes up is, "a plan of action or policy designed to achieve a major or overall aim..."

There's no plan here. It is, and always will be, a series of knee-jerk reactions from the dipshit(s) that the general population was fooled into believing would lower their cost of living. Sorry man, but even if this works at any level, it will almost surely be a blind squirrel situation.

FFS this asshat immediately blamed the gays & negros for the DC plane crash this week. He's a fucking embarrassment.

“FFS this asshat immediately blamed the gays & negros for the DC plane crash this week.”

Sorry but this is completely inaccurate. He blamed DEI. DEI chooses people based off the color of their skin (racist) and sex (sexist), NOT MERIT.

I want the most qualified and highest trained pilot flying the plane my family and I are in. Same goes for my doctors, local law enforcement, bike mechanic, etc, etc.

I could care less if it’s a man, woman, negro, Hispanic, Asian, Indian, straight, gay, or anything else…

Who has the credentials and mental capacity to handle the task at hand is what matters. Not One’s gender, sex, nationality, or sexuality.

He also blamed Obama, the guy who hasn't been president since 2017.

I'm out, I don't want to argue with a screen, but come on....

Come on what? I get it you hate Trump but he blamed DEI. Not a particular race or as sexual orientation.

DEI is nonsense which will, has, and will continue to cost people their lives.

Because I am against it, that simply makes me a sexist nationalist racist?

I think you’re missing the point.

He baselessly blamed DEI hours after the incident, effectively politicizing a tragedy. But after being here before, did we expect anything different?

Sorry there is a MASSIVE double standard here.

So the point is that Trump politicized a tragedy?.?. What human death isn’t politicized by the media and most politicians?

…school shootings
…police shootings
…hurricanes
…fires
…train accidents

Just to name a few…

If it is okay for the media to do it daily, if it is for the other side of the isle to do it daily (both sides do, daily), then why is Trump exempt from doing it?

Why is held to such a higher standard when he is such a piece of dog you know what?

It’s all hypocrisy…

EDIT: it’s not a baseless claim…. There are many examples that actually prove him correct on the DEI claims in many professions.

the number of hours it takes to become a commercial pilot on a scheduled transport, and ATC at a busy airport is not based on race or sexual identity.
It is based on merit. They are drug tested, skill tested, cardio tested every 6 months. Refresher credits required.
Only qualified in appropriate aircraft after extensive simulator, and training under a captain of that type. Required retirement dates.

The people packing boxes with paper maps being sent out to shops, or distributed to pilots with a subscription would be a job for the developmentally challenged.
Data input for record keeping - ie receiving a scheduled runway closure, and getting it listed on Notams.

I always thought these policies protected the people who were qualified, but overlooked for hiring, perhaps because of their last name, color of their skin, or non natural hair color.
It did not require you to hire anyone for a job they are not qualified for.

Does the valedictorian of an HBCU deserve the playing field be equal when applying for a job?
Or does the hiring manager never see valedictorian because they couldn't get past the name of the school?

We (meaning NJ) are a little more heterogeneous in our population mix - way more than 50 years ago. We tend to be more accepting.
It isn't like that at all in the middle of the country.

I will give it to you that Biden put an unqualified person in charge of DOE at the highest level so he could walk-the-walk.

@Oey12 I think you're grasping between the lines for things that aren't there. Much of what you're arguing against has not been said by anyone here.

Back to the tariffs, I checked out pretty early in Trump1 so I didn't really follow the tariff stuff much then. I thought this was a good look at what will likely happen, and took some cues from the Trump1 tariffs https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c20myx1erl6o

I listened to the whole JRE interview of Trump right before the election, and 2 things stuck out at me:

Trump regretted taking any advice from career politicians early on in his term. They effectively talked him out of a lot of stuff. I think that's a big part of why we're seeing such drastic action so quickly in his second term.

The other thing that stuck out is that Trump believes his economic policy failed the first time around because it didn't have enough time to be fully realized before covid. So, buckle up because it seems like he might be in for the long haul, results be damned.

@rlb I was just responding to your statement and a previous one about DEI. But respectfully I will bow out.

I understand that airline pilots require a very high level of training. But there are far too many poor candidates slipping through the cracks. I see it in my profession and I know it’s in many other technical professions.

There’s pretty much no blame being placed on the airline pilot here. It’s generally being put at the feet of either the ATC person (note there was only 1 not the usual 2 that night according to the news) or the helicopter pilot.

The reality IMO is that the accident was almost surely a combination of many seemingly small factors that all lined up badly. It’s a shitty set of circumstances that ended in a horrific tragedy.

I overstated the DJT response but I think saying it’s “completely inaccurate” isn’t fair. To immediately say it’s “common sense” that DEI is to blame is just ignorant. IMO of course.

When 911 happened did W immediately blame the other party? He did not. In time it got politicized as these things do. But it wasn’t hours after the tragedy.
