The BearScat 50!!!!!!!

Ha! That was me! I had as small multi tool with a 5mm that fell out of my camelback somehow. I was grateful to get in the extra lap and for your generosity.

No problem, I was glad to help. Couldn't imagine that anyone would attempt that race with no tools!

I had a blast despite my One and Done...

No rear brake(broken lever) and nursing strained knee ligament had me take the conservative approach. My plan was if I had made the cut-off by 20% I would have pushed another lap, which I believe I could have , even though my decrepid bones and joints would have regreted it.

I love Wayway and this course... a true MTBers delight. I had no trouble with the tech(except Jim's Bridge) or the climbs... I just do it all too slowly to be a good racer.

Knowing the terrain and still using tubes, I ran my tires on the hard side and had no flats like I saw so many of. One bent DR Hanger(fixed on the fly), One Broken Brake Lever, but no injuries and a good day. I guess no mattaer how one prepares though- anything can happen.

Thank You Black Bear! Great Job and the food was fine... even though that's not what I come to a race for.

Awesome day

I had the pleasure of working at the 13 mile feed zone with tracker and I will say that it was the best place to be. We were miles away from any DQ issues and all we saw were smiling faces. (some of which were from being delirious I'm sure!) Best group of people with great attitudes all around. It was great to help those that needed a little break from the agony. Even those that missed the turn at Lake Lookout were happy to continue riding. Props to those that went back to the start to do it again. We were able to convince a few riders to finish at the deadline. Congrats to the finishers!

With positive feedback, I'm sure our club will look to do it again next year.

WOW...that was a tough mother:cry:...But in a good way, had a fun ride with Mr Death row, what happened? I waited at the end of the bridges section?

The DQ sucked...to be fair the corner was marked...bottom line people missed it and you fixed it for the second lap. Tape across that intersection would have fixed that.

The race was super fun, well run and yes I would come back...if you'll have me?

Thanks for all the VERY HARD work putting this together for us to enjoy.

Best course ever!

Bill (graveyardman) and I were riding together for most of the race in 7th/8th postion (Open), keeping a good steady pace. On lap 2 I cut a sidewall on Pines, just before the little techy climb. I thought I had it sealed and hit it with a BigAir, but when I started rolling it went flat, so I had to pull everything out again and pop in a tube. Unfortunately, I only had enough CO2 left to put about 10psi in and 5 or 6 racers had gone by me. Luckily, Eric M. and a bunch of High Gear guys came along and gave me some more CO2 to get me going.
That was a really long flat change, so I really had to push the envelope for the last 20 miles to try and catch back on. I was only able reel one guy back in though and finished just off my top 10 goal in 11th.
It was still a great day of racing and I loved everything about the course and the event. Big thanks to Eric M. & Co. for saving my ass out there and to Pan, Norm etc. for handing me bottles & food. It took a lot of work to put this on and it's great to see everyone expressing their appreciation on here. Keep showin' the luv...the chances of this becoming an annual event are very good.
I think Norm's wife took a picture of me stuffing a whole Nutella sandwich in my mouth at once. If that looked as funny as I imagined, please get me a copy!

Tony? I completely folded and was in pain right before that section. It came out of no where...probably had something to do with me falling on that root. Glad we went out for a 2nd lap.

Bummer on the flat Gordon. You and Bill were looking really solid when you came through.

Very cool. I can only say what I saw from the pit, but there were certainly a lot of people coming through looking happy. It seems like the Black Bear crew did a great job putting together a real nice course. Part of me, a very small part, wishes I could have fit this in but it wasn't meant to be.

LOL I'll have a look tonight and post up the pics. I'll make sure I tag you on FB and post the link up here as well. We have a bunch of pics of people who came though.

Yea it's me.

Thats what happens when you ride with full suspension gearies🙄

Fun riding with you...we'll have to do it again, you doin the DH 40?

Btw, did anyone else see the huge bear on the red trail? Second lap, right before the big fire road climb he was standing right on the side of the trail. Im usually 95% sure that a bear will never do anything, so I didnt even slow down and just stared at him....as I expected, he ran off. Looked like a bear anyway, his legs were too hairy for it have been dustin 🙂

I saw the bear as well but figured I was hallucinating in my zombie-like state of mind during lap 2.

Overall I accomplished my goal and finished the 50 -this was by far the longest and hardest ride I've ever attempted.

During lap two the cramping on my inner thighs got so bad that I simply fell over on some turns - wiped myself off, slammed a couple of gels and got going again.

I'm still trying to figure out nutrition on these epic rides. Hammer Perpeteum just didn't do it and I had to gobble down gels and cliff blocks + a bonus iced tea at the 2nd aid stop (maybe I'll fuel on just that next time?)

Props to the Black Bear crew for organizing a great race. I thought the course was marked better than some H2H races but as many posted you did have to pay attention in a few areas.

The food at the end of this major haul was not great especially compared to the burgers, chicken & chilli after the 6Pack.

Thanks Black Bear for putting on a fun event. The course was challenging yet there was enough fireroad to make the 50 miler reasonable. I missed a couple of turns while in a stupor of fatigue. I thought signage was good and there were plenty of volunteers along the course.

Iggy, you looked strong at mile 40. I saw you coming around mile 37, tried to step on it to keep my position, but you were too tough. Good job.

The last ten miles were especially hard. I felt like I had two flat tires on those last fireroad climbs. I was shifting gears looking for that right one and questioned whether my fork was working properly when it dawned on me that the bike was fine, the rider wasn't.

I am satisfied with finishing fifth in 45+. I probably should have finished lower, but some of the players had mechanicals and other issues. I'll take it.

Congrats Dave on the finish, I think everyone was hurting a little at the end. Too bad you couldn't stay for the awards, you made the podium. I think Kirt grabbed your payout for you.

Hopefully we can hook up for a ride at CR sometime, its good to be able to ride with other old guys.😀

Thank you to the entire Black Bear cycling club for putting on a great event! Very well organized, great atmosphere, and VERY WELL MARKED COURSE! If you missed a turn, I don't really feel sorry for you. Listen to direction.

Hopefully the Black Bear crew are proud of the event and do not feel bad for the "inadequately marked" course "issue"...

Cheers guys and gals! See you next year!

The race director said something to me like "you probably want to string me up by my balls" (I can say "balls" on here, right?). I said that it was frustrating but it was definitely marked, life goes on etc. Not looking for anyone's sympathy, but when ~10% of the field gets disqualified on one turn it's possible that a little more could have been done to mark the turn.

!

most of the racers that missed the turn didn't seem too upset (IMO)....most of us went back out for a 2nd lap And werent considered "contenders" anyway. when I went thru it the Women's leader followed me. Shortly after I realized I missed the turn I felt bad for her

Ouch. Yeah, I didn't see anyone who was particularly upset. I was for sure disappointed because I wanted to do the full race, but it was also a bit of a relief that I could just cruise the rest of the way!

Think I may have ridden with your group a little...I was on an Anthem. Everyone seemed to be having a decent time. Also, anyone ever figure out the random split after the Rattlesnake climb? Seemed like left was where everyone was going.

Eric?

A funny moment for me during that race was When Tony (a fellow lost soul) had to drag me away from the 38mile aid station....I couldn't get away from the pretzels and M&M's. I climbed that fire road with a mouth full of food and a jersey full of bananas
