The Joy of Mountain Biking

Wrapping up the trip this weekend... I didn't keep up with the pics as we went along so expect a bunch of posts to come next week.

Places we hit up:
Manitou incline
Grand Mesa
Fruita
Moab
Arches
Black Canyon of Gunnison
Colorado National Monument
Petrified Forest
Capital Reef
Bryce
Zion -- Subway and Angels Landing
Monument valley

I hit all those places in 2008 on my Buell City-X XB9SX motorcycle. Was my 40th birthday gift to myself. 2700+ miles in 3 weeks. My first of 5 cross country motorcycle trips. Life changing. The most beautiful landscapes I have seen to date. Now I will be retiring July 1st and will try to get back out there to mountain bike those areas along with southern AZ. Cheers!!

i'm going to post in spurts over the next few days. photo heavy. and, if i miss anything, hopefully @Santapez will chime in and fill in some gaps for me. also... some of these first few pics will be repeats of what i already posted here and in the hiking thread.

ok... so here we go. (aside from Denver, most of this part of the trip was jump across the state to work until the rest of the crew flew into Grand Junction)

started off with taking a half day on friday, may 1 and began the long haul across a chunk of the country to get to Denver to see @2Julianas and @MurderBort

put the bikes in the back of the minivan to make stopping along the way a little easier since we wouldn't be needing them right away. packed all our shit into a couple of duffle bags, 3 plastic bins and some backpacks. we took a rollup mattress to sleep on in the back of the van and a tent for the couple of nights we wouldn't be airbnbing or hoteling it. we visited our first buc-ees (meh... but, man, the bathrooms are nice) and slept in the back of the van in a cracker barrel parking lot that first night. we did have to take the bikes out and lock them to the rack so we could sleep in the back of the van but it actually wasn't too bad.

saturday was a lot of driving across missouri and kansas and we eventually made our way into colorado where we met up with Alex and Mark for dinner and ice cream and crashed at their airbnb for the night. Steve also spotted one of the Starlink satellite trains so we all ran out to catch the tail-end of it. (BTW i miss seeing Alex and Mark)

sunday got brunch, checked out A&M's new house, hit up a giant REI in Denver and then made our way to the Manitou Incline for a "hike." (can you call a whole lot of stairs a hike?) had some parking lot snacks and made our way over to an actual lunch place. We had an airbnb for a few days in Colorado Springs so we checked in later that day.

The first week out was basically hopping across Colorado finding places to work. AirBnBs/motels in Colorado Springs (excellent Tea Shop -- Yellow Mountain Tea House), Salida (where it snowed and i thought we might be stuck but then it all basically melted by the afternoon 🙄 ) and eventually Montrose (good motel: Minecart Motor Lodge... which was within walking distance to The Coffee Trader which was a great spot for working from)... Also celebrated my 20 year work anniversary that week. sigh.

Friday May 8: drove over to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Cool spot but not much in the way of hikes... it's all either pretty short/easy hikes or permit only/canyoneering/climbing routes... not much in the way of moderate kind of stuff. i impulsively bought a pair of cheap binoculars at the gift shop and it was cool to test them out on the hike we did do. we were on the south side so maybe the north side trails were better. good spot to stop if you're in the area but not planning any trips around this place.

i need to stop taking vacation in spots where it still snows in spring.

ok.. where did i leave off? Officially celebrating my work anniversary (i got a cold brew coffee and sat on the porch of the previously mentioned coffee shop) and checking out the Black Canyon on Friday...

Saturday May 9, we checked out of the motor lodge, got some breakfast and met up with some friends, Kate and Grant (who are from NC and also were traveling across the country) and two of their friends, Allan and Shelby (who live in CO) for a hike at Grand Mesa. We hit some still snow covered roads and had to turn around for a different parking lot and slightly altered hike than we originally planned, but this turned out to be an amazing hike. 10/10 would do again. 11k feet and still lots of snow, beautiful views and just was a generally good time. i would love to see this (and do the originally planned loop) in warmer weather.

After the hike, Allan suggested taking the scenic route to Fruita (our next stop) so we took the Colorado National Monument Rim Rock Drive. Amazing road but some of the drop offs are dizzying. We actually took this in both directions (Grand Junction to Fruita Saturday and reverse on Sunday). Checked in to our AirBnB**, unpacked our stuff from the minivan since we were going to need it for all the group's biking stuff, and met up with Kate and Grant at Hot Tomato for pizza dinner (it is actually good Jersey pizza... nothing fancy... just a solid slice). Hung out for a bit and also grabbed some pizzas to go for the rest of the group who were flying in that night. Time flies and before we knew it we needed to get over to Grand Junction airport to pick up the other members of our group: Jonathan, Amanda, Chris & Haley. Everyone settled in for the night, unpacked, ate pizza, yadda yadda. Everyone was super excited for our start to the "official" trip Sunday.

**this place was friggin awesome for a group of bikers. we had 8 total and everyone was super comfy. plus within walking distance of the downtown area... highly recommend this place

Grand Mesa (yes... some of us are actually wearing shorts... i wore a long sleeve shirt, windbreaker and shorts and was fine... steve wore shorts but 10 jackets or something🤷‍♀️ )

FRUITA!

Grabbed breakfast at Bestslope Coffee (mmmmmmm... scones and breakfast burritos) and the biker renters picked up their bikes.

Sunday's Ride (Kokopelli): allan joined and showed us around. tons of fun but really fucking hot (this will be a reoccurring theme). we were going to do a slightly longer loop but about half of us ran out of water. i think the majority of us were packing around 2L + water bottles and it just wasn't enough. i love rocks and tech so this was a lot of fun but the heat ultimately won out.

Monday's MoJoe & PBR trails at 18 Roads : so i only did two trails. started with the climb up to MoJoe and i was having a very off day... the little bit of drop off was fucking with my head and i did the "lean to the opposite side" which lead to pedal strikes and shit... i did the MoJoe which was fun but, since i was just not in the mind set, i just told the rest of the gang i'd shuttle them to another trail. since i am the oldest of the group and i was driving the mini van, i dropped them off and said something like "be safe, kids!" when they got back to the parking lot, they told me i HAD to do PBR so they shuttled me to the start and i got to come down with minimal climbing. lots of fun but when your head's just not in it, can't push it.

while also in Fruita, chris liked his demo bike so much, he bought it! this made for a very happy chris. while waiting for all the details to be worked out, we were serenaded by our very own banjo player, Grant. and i bought cheeseburger socks. 🙂 yes... we brought "cheeseburger" with us to Brevard. it's caught on.

Cheeseburger socks FTW!

After Fruita, we moved on to Moab/Arches. I'll split the biking and hiking stuff up into 2 posts. (yes... this is a really long trip and it's going to take FOREVER to recap... tough shit. be jealous. )

ARCHES:
We did a couple of hikes in Arches. Devil's Garden. Delicate Arch. And a third evening hike to see the Double Arch and nearby North & South Windows and Turret Arch (no strava for those... they're literally park and walk a few feet) Got up super early to get to Arches just as the sun was coming up. Wanted to beat the crowds and avoid parking issues, etc. We do have a national parks pass but because we were so early for all of the parks we visited, i don't think we had to show it anywhere.

Devil's Garden is a really nice loop. We did it last time Steve and I were in Arches but this time we did it in the opposite direction which i think was better. We got to Delicate Arch around lunch and it was hot as hell... and i think a few people were conflicted between "i gotta see this" and "fuck this shit." Delicate Arch wasn't as crowded as last time so I was able to stand under the arch and get a photo.

i wanted to do a night hike and planned a couple of spots, but the evening hike to the windows area was about as far as i was going to get. between steve and grant not feeling well (this comes into play later) and just being tired from getting up early and the heat, i don't think anyone wanted to stay up super late for the stars. as with any trip, there's only so much time and stuff we need to add to the "next trip" list.

Devil's Garden Hike: (a couple of photos are not mine)

ok... i know what you're thinking.... WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH ALL THE HIKES?!?!? WHERE'S THE MOAB BIKING STUFF?!?!?!?!

here we go:
we had shuttles for the Raptor Route and Enchilada (starting in Hazard County)
Navajo Rocks
And a couple of people did Captain Ahab

First up was shuttle to Raptor Route
LOVE THIS ROUTE. when we did this last time, i joked with steve that maybe we could catch the shuttle when we finished and bribe the driver to bring us back up. this time we added a little extra to the start by climbing Kokopelli and UPS. wasn't a fan of the climb up honestly. :| we also picked up a traveler from England and it was a good thing because, although he started off strong, he quickly was in over his head... running out of water and snacks a few times. we kept him with us and, when we finished, we drove him back to the bike shop so he could meet up with his friends. otherwise 😬 We all actually had issues with the heat. we were out longer than we thought we would be and the sun was just relentless.

Navajo Rocks
anyone do these trails? someone recommended them to us but he said one side was better than the other but couldn't remember which was which. we did one of the loops but i'm wondering if the other loop would have been better. i was honestly pretty tired of all the climbing. and amanda wasn't feeling it much either so we both headed back to the car while the others did a little more riding. remember when i said steve and grant weren't feeling well.... well.... i was clearly starting to get something because i was pretty fucking pooped and somewhere in there i was starting to get the whole scratchy throat and pressure in my chest bullshit.

Captain Abab
i did not join for this one but two of the guys in the group went ahead and hit this up in the afternoon after Navajo rocks. they're actually training for a Pisgah race so they've been really hitting the trails lately and were clearly in much better shape to take on extra stuff than the rest of us.

Shuttle for Enchilada minus Burro Pass
so of course, this is on the last day of the trip with the whole crew when we're all pretty sunned-out and tired. Allan joined us again (we let him crash at our airbnb in exchange for helping to drive people back to the Grand Junction airport saturday) and we got a shuttle up to Hazard County. when we originally planned this, we were all going to do the enchilada... but, a few people decided early on to switch to Raptor Route after the top portion because they just didn't want to do Porcupine Rim after watching way too many youtube videos. i had my doubts but was willing to try until whatever chest cold thing i was getting decided to pop up. i decided the day before enchilada just wasn't going to happen for me and i would switch to the raptor route after the hazard county start. the start was beautiful and i was having a great time on the hazard county downhill stuff... but the climb right after the shuttle dropoff killed me. i couldn't breathe and my legs were super tired. so much for thinking i'm even mildly in shape 🫤 we were way quicker with the top + raptor route than with the hitchhiker the other day and it was much cooler/ earlier which helped, but i was pretty dead. 3 of our crew did do the whole enchilada stuff and actually finished not too long after we split with them (they're very strong riders). we all met up at Milt's for milkshakes and i'm pretty sure i passed out at the picnic table. bike renters had to return their bikes so they went back to the shuttle lot, grabbed the cars, returned the bikes and picked up my poor corpse to bring it home. passed out in bed and i'm pretty sure they were wondering where to bury my body.

Pipe Dream (bonus)
Two of the guys rode this from the airbnb. i think they said it was ok... kinda like a good, it's there for an evening ride kind of thing but it helped them set up their bikes and whatnot. throwing this out there in case you're in Moab and might want to check it out.

BUT WAIT... THERE'S MORE!

i'll wrap this up as quickly as possible because you're all probably sick of me right now.

after the Moab biking, half the group flew back to NC while two drove back and Steve and I continued on for the rest of our trip:

Capital Reef: we just took a drive thru here. it looks like there's some nice hikes to check out but we didn't have much time to check things out.

Escalante Petrified Forest State Park: just a cool quick hike. camped at Escalante Outfitters for the night.

Bryce Canyon National Park: very nice loop. very accessible (meaning "easy" enough where you see a good number of people (and horses) along the trail. never got the "we're alone" feeling. stayed at the Historic Smith Hotel Bed & Breakfast. not the most modern but it was good to clean up and shower and just take a good long rest. we also got the "grab & go" breakfast option and she made us little bags with muffins, fruit, fruit bar and a drink since we were leaving super early in the morning for Zion.

Zion: i mentioned a little while back that i was able to snag permits for both The Subway & Angel's Landing at Zion on back to back days. I thought the end (the "subway") was really cool and walking thru the water was nice... but it did get a little monotonous like i could have done with about half the hike to the subway part. Steve's feet got really cut up and by the time we hiked out, i was pretty done. As for AL, i was worried i wouldn't be able to do it since i can have issues with heights... but, apparently, i was having a really good day. i had a few small "can i do this" moments but i did the whole thing and felt pretty good. the rock was really grippy and i never had that feeling like i was going to slip. we didn't have to worry about too many people hiking when we went up but coming down, the lines were starting to form. i wish we were able to do our original plan of biking to the trailhead, but we had a few bike issues and just turned around and took the shuttle. i don't know if i would really try to do either of these again unless i was heading out there with a group who really wanted to do these. i feel like i checked these off the list and now we can look at other trails to check out at Zion (yes... i want to hit up Zion again now that i have a better understanding of it)

Monument Valley: We camped here and would totally stay again. We arrived a little too late to do the scenic drive but the campground was good and the view was amazing. would camp here again if we're in the area.

after all of this, we headed to Tallico Plains, TN for a weekend wedding before, finally calling it quits and heading home. I'm sure i left stuff out and Steve can fill in blanks if he wants to.

As if traveling across the country wasn't enough, I began the application process to adopt a cat from a local shelter. I was quickly approved but he remained in foster care for me until we returned from the trip. We picked him up as a foster-to-adopt deal but we made it official and signed all the paperwork Wednesday.

Ladies and gentlemen-- please meet Teddy (and if i have my way, his full name will be Theodore Alixander Bear**... Steve isn't quite as on board with it.)

He's a playful little furball monster who doubles as a purring machine.

Steve and I have the opportunity to join a team for the HTC relay race (yes... it's a running race) and i'm seriously considering it. we'd make it a vacation while we're out there.
