The other day in the "hood"....

I was heading out for an easy spin after school on Wed. To get out of my neighboorhood, I ride the few miles between here and my school. About a block from school, lounging around at the base of a hill, were a bunch of boys...guys...youths...on skateboards.

I glanced over and three of the boys were my students in AP Bio. By the time I get them in AP Bio, I have had most of my students twice, so we all know each other pretty well. Big school, small community if that makes sense.

So I circle around to say high and see if they will perform feats of daring. When I pulled up, in cycling gear, helmet and glasses, they had no idea who it was. Once I removed the glasses and they got over the shock of seeing me out of my lab coat, they launched into...you shoulda just been here....we raced down the hill.

So I looked at them and said....you wanna race me down the hill? Well yes we do...we are boys and would love to race our teacher down the hill. So off we go. We climb up the hill and get ready. They warn me not to be too bummed when I get destroyed. I smile, explain that I am clipped in and please to not swerve in front of me.

Well you know the rest....I waited for them at the bottom....they were in shock...did not know a bike could go that fast...or an old woman. I think I am now an urban legend.😀

Hey what can I say? This is big excitement in my "hood" and the following day in class, I got a lot of questions about biking. Where do we ride, and how far, and who do I train with....so interest was sparked.

That's funny. Maybe the whole team should show up one day with our space suits on and we can say we are taking over the planet.

And for next week's lesson, you bring your bike into the classroom and hop up on the desks. 🙂
