Great Blue Heron catching some rays this morning

On my pond inspections today, this killdeer got so close I thought it was injured. I tried to catch it but it finally flew about 10 yds away. Probably a nest nearby - trying to scare me off.

Family of Sandhill cranes were too close to a Redwing blackbird nest. It kept diving at them, though they didn't seem to care much

Blue Jay flew in the garage and got into the trusses. After two hours of hopping around up top end to end and squawking it finally came down and flew out the wide open door.

I'm planning to put up a birdhouse on top of an old laundry pole. Looking to diy one which is about 2 feet wide. What's important to include? Is one foot deep enough?

Hole size very important......Do not attract sparrows or starlings, they are non-native, over productive and we have too many already. Research how to attract house wrens, nice addition to a back yard.
