Wheel storage ideas...

First world problems, I know... but I have a crap-load of spare wheels. Currently, I store most of them in my basement on hooks hanging from the ceiling. It works, but they are in the way and since the ceiling isn't very high, they kinda kill the space below/around them. So I've been pondering other solutions.

This picture was in the Val Di Sole World Champs tech blog on Pinkbike. Looks interesting and may work better for me...

It looks like it's meant to fold up, which makes sense for a race pit. If I create my own version, I'd probably put it on casters so I can roll it around the basement. By my current count, I would need three of these... or I'd expand the design to hold 10 wheels... 😵‍💫

I like this...although in my case, id like it more tiled on its side and hung from my garage ceiling.
 
That almost looks like a room divider modified. Which may be a good starting point for it. Buy a 3-pane divider and cut up the 3rd pane for the cross pieces.

Thanks for reminding me I need to just get rid of my worthless 135mm rear wheels laying around.

And me with my collection of 142mm (non-Boost) and old 27.5" 157mm DH wheels...

The only reason I keep the old 157mm wheels around is I keep thinking about buying a Tora EVH and having it made for 157mm rear wheels... but at the same time, the added cost is probably not rally worth it... I really just need to take inventory on what I have and what I really want to keep.

I still like the idea of a mobile rack for the wheels vs. hanging from hooks spanning across my basement and basically blocking access to everything behind and under them. This really came to a head when I started the LED fixture replacement project mentioned over in the Home DIY thread... I need to get to the lights but all these damn wheels are in the way.

I feel like something that offsets the hubs would be better use of the space - it would be wider by 1/2 wheel+, but the height would just be the hub spacing + a little less than tire/rim width.

Maybe... although in the case of my basement, I'm more willing to make the rack taller than to have it take up more floor space.

Looking at that design some more, I would also add some foam strips on top of the rails. Not needed for a race-pit setup, but in my case the wheels may (almost certainly will) sit on the rails for long periods of time. Not a big deal for the wheels without tires mounted, but I will have a few wheelsets with tires mounted and the rails could leave imprints into the sidewalls.
 
I already hang the bikes off wall hooks. More specifically, staggered Gladiator hooks on two rows of Gladiator slat-board. Mtn bikes hang from the front axles with the front wheel removed. Usually the pedals are off as well. The two road bikes can just squeeze in with the front wheels and pedals on. Front wheels go on the floor, wedged in between. Bearing in mind, this allows me to store 6 bikes in 4 feet of wall space. This is also one reason my quiver can't really go beyond 7 bikes. The weight of the Heckler keeps it off the rack, although I do usually park it with the front wheel off so it's not quite as much in the way. Also why all of my mtn bikes have QR thru-axles.

No bikes or anything bike-related in the garage. That's where the cars live - barely... it's a 1.5 car garage, but Triumphs are small.

Under the stairs isn't really an option either. Just not enough room and currently blocked by shelving units.
