WMA Trailhead Pipe

Based on the Sussex county land ownership data I'd say the trail junction (orange & geen) is part of the Weldon Brook WMA. East of the railbed is Mahlon, and the railbed plus all of the land west is Weldon Brook. This is all approximate of course but I'd give the nod towards this piece of land being in Weldon.

What is the back story on Mahlon? One piece of data claims the portion in Sussex County is a WMA but there is no WMA map published by the DEP. Is this leased by Morris County and included as part of MD Reservation?

No idea...I just ride there, work on the trails (legally), and generally look pretty...

Looks like the request for access improvement goes to NJDEP.
They'll probably send guys up from Trenton with suits on to make a determination.

"I will forward the (pipeline fix) request to our land management office for review.
You can reach the office at 973-383-0918."

Maybe ground can be broken on the project before it freezes and the water turns to ice.

I spoke with Bob Olsen from NJ Fish and Wildlife. His # is (973) 383-0918.
He is the trail maintenance coordinator for all of Northern NJ.
He told me that there is a JORBA project connecting Weldon Brooke WMA with Sparta Mountain WMA about to commence. He seems pretty keen on getting boardwalks and trails rebuilt on state land. (does do county land). He figures since he is going out there anyway, he may as well check out the broken trail head pipe.

That's good news .

Interesting point to note . Today while riding up the rail bed , we were passed by a cop on a quad . I didn't look close enough to note who he specifically represented .He looked just like a trooper that would pull you over on Rt 80 .
My guess was he was fish and wildlife and he was doing a drive by via the WMA since it's bow hunting season .
As we got up to the trail head pipe in mention .... it's all gutted up because he had just gone over it and through the mud with his quad making huge wide divots .:hmmm:

To protect and swerve.

I also have noticed a lot of ATV activity during different rides and hikes this fall. Maybe not the law enforcement type you encountered. I think more like a bunch of yahoos. Get some legs and lungs, men.

BTW - I sent a note to Norm at Jorba about the Trail Maintenance Manager. Maybe this
will get things moving over there.

twice we had seen 2 guys that we assumed were hunting , in camo and all , on quads in the WMA ... I don't know if they are permitted there or not .

Norm A. has been in contact with the NJDEP rep. regarding this issue. She requested some information on steps to minimize ATV access at this point. Last I heard, she was reviewing his proposal.

No. I owe Norm A a phone call to follow up on his discussions with the NJDEP. Will do that today.
