BIYF Winter 2020-2021: Go Zwift or Go Home!!!!

Yeah, mine has been fine since that incident *knock on wood*

While we're on the subject, does your Garmin charge after a sub-25° ride? I have to warm mine up in my pocket or on top of a chemical warmer for a few minutes before it will charge. Figure it's a battery safety thing, but who knows.
I never really took note, but I did notice the battery % dropping dropping but them being fine when I turn it on the next time.

This is my "quick hour loop" around my hood. Train tracks were pretty good, ventured onto the Canal to break trail for 8ish miles. Really surprised at how few people have been out.

After the Franklin Bridge off Easton Ave it was nice and fast. So only about 5 miles was pushing at 1mph in foot deep snow.

Driving was sketch today so wasn't heading back to the well of thornhurst
No recent reports ot trailability in mt top so I went out for some recon yes the D&L was packed down by sleds and it was good climbing and all still a lot of work though coming back was harder on the rail trail it softened up enough to slow me down or maybe I was just tired

1.5 Today

My life is slipping past lately, with minimal riding. Today I did all of the things, then said go dog go, and when I got to the top of the trails with low expectations I had low expectations. There was a 12-16” wide something or other, and I did my best to blow out my triceps while not landing face first on the side of the trail. Peaceful in the woods, but the effort ramped exponentially and the glasses be fogging, but I powered thru without passing out, and it turned into an adventure. Yay bikes!

1hr, 1pt

After waiting for shoes to dry out, was able to get out for an hour. My original thought was to try some more of the towpath south of Kingston, but the later start and warmer temps had me convinced the snow would be too soft. So I stayed close to home and got an hour ride just going around with no real plan or direction. Came home and found the wife and kids baking up a valentines cake for later. Should have rode harder to preburn the calories.

Totally thought today would be a no go with the predicted ice but it was kinda almost warm out after yesterday’s 20F ride.

Got the morning chores done and got back on the mtb for some road loops. Decided to check out Columbia trail since someone asked about it. There was a middle path about 8-10” wide and I got about 100’ in and decided it wasn’t worth it. The packed down part is full of random divots and footprints and felt more like a cobblestone road. Granted my tires were a bit firm
Since I knew I was riding mostly road but maybe a fatbike could manage it.

Headed back to my neighborhood for some more loops and did a few efforts to raise the HR a bit. I figure it’s already a good workout so pushed it a few times to get the blood flowing.

After that I got home to take the dog out in the yard to do her thing and check out the backyard trail conditions. Seems like someone let their dog run crazy so I walked the course and smoothed out the trail with a shovel. 😬. I also filled in any of the bare spots with a snow to not damage the terrain.

After the dog was done I was like well
I am home might as well put on a fresh base layer and dry hat and get dry gloves and go back out on the trail. I debated for 5 minutes to cut some new trail sections with the snowblower but since the conditions were good didn’t want to waste time.

I’m pretty sure my neighbors now think I am nuts if they saw me doing loops for about 30 minutes but I enjoyed it since I am learning the bike and how to handle it. With low tire pressure and the right snowpack it does just fine.

I estimate I added about 2.5 miles of loops around the yard from when I got back. And apparently my oldest son didn’t make me into some stupid Tik Tok video cause he didn’t even know I was back there when he got home from work.

I guess now I can do loops at lunch this week and skip Zwift. Lol.

Happy to report I was back on a bike this morning. Less happy to report that my Garmin cropped out on my a did not record most of my ride, it wouldn’t be fair to ask for points as it has happened before...I’m not that type of guy. My score is meager anyway so...For those interested Ringwood fire roads are nicely packed, just don’t get on a trail or you’ll be in knee high soft snow trying to get traction. Also tried the big boy...Aarrrr....

After an earlier morning hike with the dog, I found 6MR somewhat rideable. Snowshoer's and hikers made a 18" or so wide trail and was pretty well packed. So after bleeding the brakes on my Beargrease I decided to give it a rip. It was late in the afternoon and I hedged my bets to get out of the woods before dark. Hoping the BIYF judges can spot me one tiny second, cause I def felt there were some times I was moving, but it was slow and didn't realize it till this post. Punchy uphills were hard to keep traction and if you ventured off the swath you could find yourself in some deep snow. I feel like the Canal side was a complete loop as I didn't see any reverse tracks other than my own. Spent some time on the D&R since it was dark and that had the same pathway to ride. 5" tires def will only make it better

What pressure are you running? I was riding Tourne on Saturday with a 29 2.4 recon in the front and 2.35 Racing Ralph on the rear and pressure at about 17 and 19. Under the current conditions (in my opinion) as long as the packed areas are frozen/firm it’s more about holding ones line(and tire pressure) than the width of the tire. I saw mostly people riding regular mountain bikes the past few days on the trails.
