The Indoor Cyclist's support thread

I have a wahoo speed/cadence sensor you can have. Still uses magnets for pedal and wheel, but uses Bluetooth/ant+

Thanks so much. I have the sensors from my obsession with stuff. Just never used them without a head unit and subscription.

You could use the free version of Trainer Day as your head unit on any phone. I use their $4/ month subscription and am very happy with it. Never got into the virtual part of Zwift

speed/cadence sensor, and the Wahoo app....... record exercise as exercise bike.. maybe that works?

I have an old cateye computer you can have. It used a wheel sensor for distance and speed. It will need sensors and a battery.

Found a couple of sensors in the drawer -
To use the Apple Watch HR function, the app has to run on the watch - They weren't subscription $Free
So picked-up an inexpensive arm band HRM - We had an extra chest strap, but see obsession with 'stuff'
- i can always borrow it.

Paired it up with a new Wahoo account/App, and she is on her way.

Here goal here is a knee rehab - medium resistance, low cadence.
Finding that she had only gone a couple miles in 20 minutes was a bit of a shock to her!

Got lucky and won a zwift gravel race tonight.

Really close to pulling the trigger on the Jetblack Volt. Can get one for $360....the spin bike + power pedals works fine, but it definitely is less fun for interval workouts trying to nail the resistance needed.

Works with 148 thru axles so I can just toss one of my mtb's on there for winter. Don't really feel like sourcing a trainer bike.

Seems like a great deal. I’m annoyed with how much I spent on my kickr.

The new Zwift Hub is a rebranded and tweaked version of this trainer which is getting pretty good reviews all around. If I find a way to get the funds for this I think they nailed the price point/feature set pretty well for a wheel off smart trainer.

This is not an in-depth review, but I have been very happy with the Hub. The first unit failed after one workout, so they sent me a brandy new one the next day. For the past three months it has been great. I don't even use Zwift anymore (using Trainer Day). The re-calibration is done during my warmup once per week, so I don't really see a big issue there. I use erg mode twice per week and resistance/slope for the other workouts. I have had zero issues with it controlling and/or sending data to my Garmin, iPhone, and computer. It also allows heartrate via bluetooth to minimize an additional hookup for certain programs (AppleTV). I also played around with Trainer Road and Roy before settling on Trainer Day, and there were no issues there either.

I bought the Zwift hub and have been using it for about 2-3 months now and its been great. Great value, reliable, compatible with all sorts of bike types and was very easy to set up.

There are a few caveats for hooking your MTB up to it though...

Out of the box it comes with a shimano HG driver which is only good for shimano 11sp MTB cassettes or 12 sp cassette from Sunrace or that one Sram MTB cassette that uses it. No microspline or XD driver available (there is an XDR driver from Jetblack but it is hard to find in stock). So depending on your bike, additional purchases may be needed to make it work. The hub is available with a 12sp cassette (but its often sold out) but its a road cassette (if you care about the gearing difference).

Next, a 1x MTB drivetrain plain sucks in Zwift Watopia. If you plan to do the courses/races/events there, you will constantly spin out a 32x11t combo. If you do workouts in ERG mode only, gearing doesnt matter and you're fine.

3 weeks ago i got fever for a day sore throat for 4 then felt off for a week, hot and no will to ride. I let it go for 8 days then just sucked it up and went to the minute clinic. They swabbed for strep and it was positive. Took penicillin for a week. In my younger days i would have just rode through it. Total almost 3 weeks off the bike in my build season. Took an easy ride the day after stopping meds, then a hard one outside then hit the dyno today. I plan on being at least 330w by april.

So here’s a strange scenario.

Last week Wednesday morning I went to jump on zwift before work and usually by the time I get my shoes on and the zwift companion app fired up along with the smart trainer everything pairs up in 30 seconds or less. I had heard about the latest update so I had done that the day prior but silly me I didn’t really fully test anything.

So I see my HRM won’t connected said connection failure but the trainer is working. NBD just doing an easy spin before work anyway.

I get home that night and assumed the battery in the HRM must be bad. First I try it with my phone over BT it won’t connect. I test it connected to the garmin. Works fine. Test it connected to the rower works fine.

Hmm. Ok well I will change the battery anyway just in case. NOT. Stupid design has these small screws and again I can’t get one of them out.

Didn’t need zwift anyway until this morning for recovery. Did the hour with no HRM it’s connected but not showing any BPM.

I had already removed and reinstalled all the apps. Deleted and reconnected the HRM from the phone and still nothing.

When I was done I was done with my spin I decided to try one last idea and go back to the direct BT option (not via Companion app). Formerly this didn’t work due to what I thought was too many BT connections via Apple TV and I was running this perfectly fine the last few months this way.

Now seems it works WITHOUT companion app??

Baffled but don’t feel like hunting around zwift forums to see if the latest update made this break or work better. Will see how it goes next time. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Apple TV will only connect two bt devices but it looks like that's what you have. Magnus for power, cadence and controllable and then chest strap for hr. Should have always been fine that way.

Yeah that’s what I thought too but in the very beginning when I got the ATV I had so many issues with disconnects , once I bridged with the companion app it worked perfect.

Now the opposite seems true so will have to see how it goes next time I try it. Even tho my IT brain wants to dig into it and figure out what changed, I’ll be glad if it just works next time I try it and move on. I hate when I get set for a workout with limited time and it’s a hassle.

My stages bike is great but a pain with atv. It uses left power meter for power, then the bike for cadence and controllable plus hrm. So with atv can only use the bike as all 3 because of lack of bt

I found a few interesting BT connection quirks with zwift on in ATV. The one I had that was similar to your’s turned out to be my AirPods connecting (cuz I as listening to a podcast while trying to connect devices) and taking up the other BT slot. Similarly, after using the iPhone as a keyboard prior to the zwift session, that also made the BT not pair with the HRM.

Unfortunately companion doesn’t work to solve my problems. When i race i use my macbook because the appletv lagtime is 3-4 seconds and u get dropped like a bad habit
