Home/Garage Security

The Stolen Bike thread makes me want to revisit this topic. What is everybody running for home security? I've been looking into Ring devices and I had a home security consult with AC Daughtry. Still looking into options.

As you can probably imagine we are exploring this as well. Normally I'd just go ADT and be done with it...but with seven people in/out of our house all day the practicality of a dedicated system is pretty low.

What I think I’m looking for will end up as more of a deterrent. I just hate the idea of having to pay for another subscription for video storage or monitoring. I’m currently looking at the ring flood light/camera option as I only really want the garage protected. They can take the rest 😎

Currently have the Xfinity security system as part of our cable, phone, and internet package. Motion sensor by the front door and all doors have a proximity switch. No cameras, but wife and I just decided to get 1 for coverage of the detached garage, travel trailer and attached patio area.

I have a Blink camera setup. One in the backyard, one in the driveway (floordlight), one in the basement directly on the bikes and a doorbell.

It was a kit for like $150 from Costco. Works pretty well.

I have a really sweet ADT... sign.

I'd like a real system, but much like a dog barking, the sign goes a long way. That plus a motion triggered light on the garage is probably what I want.

Anyone care to divulge what monthly monitoring/video storage costs are for their respective products?
Ring looks like it's $3 per camera per month or $10 for multiple cameras per month.

I will recycle what I suggested to install at every trail head to prevent the quad invasion...machine gun nests!

I found living across from a police station works great, but I have no idea how much it costs to build and staff a police department.

Uhmmm...or maybe not. It was peaceful though...

Wyze cameras on the house. Cheap in the grand scheme. Technology getting better with motion following and zoom cameras when triggered.

Just a reminder - I put my name and phone number on a sheet of paper rolled up in the seat tube or handlebar to document that its mine if its ever stolen and found, you can prove its yours.

If you buy PoE cameras and an NVR, the data stays with you, no monthly costs. Usually up to 30 days of video if it's set up correctly.

i have a couple of wifi cameras (powered, not battery) on the house, they have an SD card to store videos to when motion is detected and an app you can use to access them, monthly cost $0 no clue what brand they are right now but i have had them working as designed for years.

A friend has Wyze cameras, plugs & water sensors all over.
Seem to work great and cheap. Controls everything from the phone.

I have an NVR with PoE cameras, one of them inside the garage facing the doors. Links to free app to view. The entire network rack is also on UPS so everything will run for a while on battery. NVR is nice for the free recording. Setting up notifications for movement in certain camera zones is a little more advanced than with a lot of the big name apps, so there's the tradeoff I guess if you want notifications. I'm not sure if there are any free services left though. Even my Ring doorbell you have to subscribe to have recording history for activity, otherwise it's just live view. Can't even go back to see what triggered a movement notification, so then I need to connect to the NVR to watch the neighborhood cat tearing open garbage bags.
