James Pearl Thinks Blogging is Dead

So my question: Inside of, let's say 2-2.5 hours from central jersey, what is the most epic/bigly trail system in the area?

will you include a 2 hour plane ride to Asheville in that equation? it does include room and board for certain people and personalized tours of trails in the area... and maybe some side trips to coffee roasters.

does it include pickup/dropoff at the Asheville airport and loaner bike? afaf of course.

Hmm, problem here is that you have to count the pre/post part of the trip. So it makes the total trip like 5 hours.

Allegiant does fly from Newark to Asheville now. And bikes are pretty cheap with them.

Maybe not epic to you but I find port jervis pretty satisfying. Kinda like CR but on steriods. Super rocky, trails are packed down well and probably best marked trails around. Did 21 miles today and I sure do feel it. I need to start on painted arrow not save it for the end lol...

I would do this - and since Norm is first in line to sleep with Franklin I could even stay locally. Play my cards right and get work to pay for it too.

: Backyard Trails

I was going to talk about training today but I ended up working on my backyard trails for 2 hours then riding it for a half hour in the midst of it. The pattern that seems to work best is to pick something to work on, finish it, ride for 15 minutes, then work on something else I want to tweak, then ride for another 15 minutes. I don't have quite enough trail to ride for much more than that without getting too repetitive, but I can say that I'm not bored after 30 minutes. I'm rolling with the park trail work and making time to work on the stuff in my own yard. Today I worked on jump #1 and jump #3. In total there are 4 jumps now, plus a berm. I have big plans for the post berm but I'm not sure if that's something I'll get to this year.

I decided to use some old wood to frame out the edges of the 3rd jump, as seen below. We've used rocks in the past and that does nothing at all to help keep the dirt in place. Over a very short time. all the dirt washes away. While I know this will happen here as well, it's easy to take some fill from the pile and build it back up pretty easily. The ramp after the jump is actually a former drop, which was fine but it doesn't totally fit the flow now. This will be removed and used elsewhere. I'm going to turn this into a jump (seen below) and a lower landing (doesn't exactly exist quite yet) to help the transition into jump #4, which you can see slightly to the right of the drop where the double tree is. The berm is obvious in the distance.

I have this down pretty well now, even though jump 1 is a bit too close to the whale. I'll need to move that back to get the spacing right. But the key takeaway here is that I can now hit the berm without hitting my brakes. I feel like I now have the flow of this thing coming together.

No-Topic November - Ramen

: Food

I don't have a lot to talk about today, not specifically. Since we last spoke, I did a 7 hour TM at CR, did a ride at CR, and dialed in the backyard B line to be riding really well. But nothing in that is specific enough to warrant words. So I scrolled through my phone's pictures and I found this. This is our homemade ramen and it is legit as tasty as it looks. We've been working on this recipe for well over a year now, and we have the 3 main ingredients pretty dialed in. The broth, while not tonkotsu because that takes days to do right, is legit-solid. The pork is roasted for 3 hours at least a day in advance. And the eggs are soft boiled to perfection. The rest is window dressing, for me. Noodles are about the least important thing in a ramen for my tastes. This is 1 of the few meals that all 5 of us really enjoy. When we sat down to eat this last week, there was total silence at the table. That's always a positive sign.

Question - what's your specialty? What have you been trying to dial in, or have dialed in? What would you serve me if you had me over for dinner?

Italian Sausage risotto. I have it down to a science at this point, 25 minutes pan to plate. Absolutely delicious, one of our weekly staples

Somehow this is the only picture I have of it. Usually it's a little prettier but you get the idea.

I was just telling you how a lap at rays took me about 6 minutes, and thats all inside...I think you should make this your goal

I invented these and even cooked them for you in your kitchen....can't say I have been doing much dialing over the years....you don't perfect "original coke"...you just leave it as is.

November didn't stick.

What can I say? I tried but there wasn't enough of a driving force to keep it going. While there's always something to talk about, not having a motivating factor lead me down a path of just choosing not to post anything most days. I was going to go with M-F, something like that. But I just wasn't inspired. I had enough rolling through the previous 2 months so maybe I needed a break. It's good to take a break. Maybe I'll do a picture every day for December? I know Joy likes that better. Honestly I like writing a single paragraph too. It's easier. And contained. I'll try that. Tomorrow. Today you get more than 1 paragraph.

Here's a funny thing that happened. In September & October I put in 61 hours of TM (we track for NICA so I know this). Last night I lifted weights for the first time in 2-3 months. Without fail, each exercise I did was higher than 2+ months ago, by a considerable amount. So doing TM is a pretty reasonable replacement for lifting weights. That said, it's cold outside. I don't like the cold.

I'm not a Florida guy. But we were there last week with Kirt & his family and I gotta say that this weather makes me miss it a little bit. The weather, and the good times both. That said, I'll be hanging out with Kirt tomorrow. We're going to leave the families at home though. I'll be sure to post a picture and a paragraph about it.

Randomly. If I were going to start a band I would call it: Stephen Hawking's Wheelchair.

The below represents what was a really fantastic morning in Florida at the beginning of October. After that trip we went to Sedona then Florida again. I have a MA trip coming up then we wrap the year up with Canada. I'll spend 13 nights away from home in December. But not this weekend. We'll be home this weekend. I'm trying to find my mushroom risotto recipe to make, maybe for Saturday night.
