Let's see your EMTBs!

Quick question on ebike sizing. Are folks sizing up or down if in between sizes? I'm 5'9" and for companies like Cannondale I'm either a medium or large based on their size guide. For bikes I've been sizing down, but not sure it's the same. Not in the market yet, so just browsing...

I’m usually digging the deep dive with customers on a daily basis on sizing/it’s not really dry. I’m 5 foot 9 1/2 and the charts will put me on a medium, but I always buy a large.

Personally, I go by the reach number when looking at sizes. Another thing to consider is the chain stay length and overall wheelbase, which can have a big affect on how the bike will feel on the trail.

I can't stress it more, swing a leg over before buying. Sit on anyones you see. The sizing seems all over the place. I have always judged by reach but with seat angles so extreme now it's hard to even go by that.

That Pivot LT that Jdog has on sale just pulled a win on Loam Wolf shoot out as best over all. Seems the Ep801 has caught up with Bosch Gen4.

Nobody here is buying a bike from Dick's to ride around the block. Proper fit is huge and it can make or break the experience. Matty's 100% right, figure out a way to demo.

I havent ridden many other bikes to compare, but I do enjoy the hell out of my LT

I found this interesting in the comments

I agree with riding as many as you can swing a leg over. But like any big purchase, you'll probably second-guess whatever you choose.

When I was at Davis over the weekend, one of my friends joked, "when you buy an e-bike, plan on buying two... since one of them will probably be in the shop..." IIRC, he has a Canyon and the local shop is waiting on parts from Shimano to repair it. That said, he has a history of breaking almost every bike he's owned and currently has back-ups for just all of his trail and enduro bikes. He lives near Davis and rides rocky tech trails almost exclusively now and between that and his "bull in a china shop" riding style means he breaks bikes.

I'll admit I've become familiar enough with the Moterra SL that I may very well buy one to have as a back-up. Or the demo if/when it becomes available. Although, to be honest - my issue is space and I don't really have room for the bike I have on order - which will be bike #7 - much less a #8.

It was interesting how in that video they really don't consider the motor system to be a deciding factor when choosing a bike. The differences are somewhat subtle and not difficult to get used to.

Last year the Pivot LT had an honorable award everyone liked it except for the EP8 motor was lagging behind the others. This year that sentiment has changed with the ep801 motor now up there with the Bosch. My Orbea Wild won the previous 2 years with 2023 being the gen2 year and still snagged best all around racer this year. The one dude who gave it a low score should stick to riding gravel, lol...

Just out of curiosity, do the ep801’s have that loose nuts in the down tube sound like the ep8’s? I tried a Marin Alpine trail with an ep8 and down hills were a rattle fest.

So this was a non issue through these reviews. Yes I watch everyone one of them and all things emtb. Now complaints are which motor is loudest. The odd thing is one ep801 was louder then another manufacturer. So even design by how the manufacturer encloses its motor seems to be the case. I definitely never thought about motor skid plate until I got the wild which has a bash plate as strong as McDonald's coffee cup. The AVS aluminum bash has finally solved that problem but it's already beat up good. That Pivot did their homework on this area.

I really don’t care about the motor noise under power. The ep8’s have a lot of free play between the gears inside the motor unit and they rattle like crazy on the down hills. It’s one of the reasons I bought a bike with the Brose drive unit. They use a carbon belt rather than gears in the enter face between the motor and the crank. Belts don’t rattle.

My First sentence addressed this, ep801 rattle is not noticeable like the ep8

Does anyone make a "real" class 3 mtb? Usually relegated to road bikes and commuter bikes.
I have a 28mph Commuter bike w a Bosche motor. After ridign that, 20mph seems super slow on the road. As for offroad, I do hit the limiter on down hills once in a while, but not enough to wish for the 28mph.

Hell, even 27.5 2.6 at the “proper” pressure, i would roll the rear tire in corners often

iv found 2.4 width is the sweet spot for me, YMMV but thats what iv been happily running for a while now.

Well if you know my riding I don’t really ride tech I prefer the flowy stuff like Nassau and the not so rocky parts of stephens.

I haven’t ever tried the bike with 29” at all Id have to get it all adjusted.

But if you’re not really using your 27.5 wheels… hmmm. 🤪

not sure what youd have to adjust to fit 29, my fuel ex goes back and forth with the ONLY change being the wheels, dont even have to adjust the calipers for the rotors . . . .

and im not sure i want to part with the wheels, they are a nice to have extra set, and they do serve a purpose once a year when we get some snow on the trails, that said for the right price anything is possible.

I received a text from Halter's that my bike is ready for pickup. But it was sent when I was at Nesh and too late for me to make it to the shop before closing... and I have a work function Thursday so I won't be able to get it until Friday or possibly Sat. 😕
