Better, stronger, faster.....

Deja vu all over again.

Looks like my return to action is not to be quite yet.

36 hours in the Overlook ER has determined that my aortic valve is toast ( six years after valve preserving aortic graft )

Good to find out before winding up in a body bag.

Hoping to get the plumbing work done in Morristown. 😕

Good luck for a speedy recovery

Sorry to read this. Good luck bouncing back--from what I read above you've developed your flexibility gene, and it looks like it will be put to even more use!

Pays to be flexible.

That being said I did name this blog ‘Better Stronger Faster’ in 2018 and I’m still waiting……😤

Made it to my step down room this afternoon. Seems to have been a complete success. Since I went the full surgical route and a biologic route, should be no limits on type nor quantity of activities. 👍 Grounded for six weeks until the sternum mends however. ( trainer in 4? )

Been a bit of a slog this week. I think the important stuff seems good but lots of tweaking in terms of fever, blood loss, blood sugar, lung collapse and blood pressure. Big shout out to MS and Crowdstrike for the three and and half hour delay in getting my oxycodone on Thursday morning. 🤯

Hoping for a discharge tomorrow and a slow and steady return to activities. Just walking at first but back on the trainer at the four week milestone. 🤞

How are you sleeping?
Sitting up?

Hospital might want to do a little disaster planning....

Sleep is poor.

Sitting up is ok.

I would imagine that a number of hospitals made booboo’s early on Thursday. I think Morristown got an alternate (human) process working before they got all their Windows OS images remediated. My technique of asking for pain meds at the last possible moment did not work in my favor this time.

Ok the re-re-re-rebuilding phase has started two weeks earlier than anticipated.

Starting with the very cautious post-ER, pre-surgery 170 watt FTP I dialed it back 15% and HR stayed below 120…

28 days until I can ride outside, I have some work to do.

Took the single speed out for a 50 miler yesterday. Feeling a lot of gratitude for getting eight weeks of superb weather to start my recovery. Have been riding six days a week which has enabled a nice gradual ramp up. Heart has been working perfectly, huge improvement from pre-surgery function. Just got the green light that the sternum is healed so I can get back to the gym. On the downside looks like the right shoulder is toast with almost half the ball on the humerus ‘missing’. So far the remaining portion has not died so I’ll call that a win. Not a problem with biking yet, just means I have to use the drops to get low, not very flat bar friendly but given the loss of function not a bad outcome.

For myself at least recovering from major injury is just as satisfying as trying to train for some epic event. Same thought process and same progress tracking.

Next stop a bike trip to AZ in two weeks. Hopefully ready for Mt Lemon and Mt Kitt by that time. Slow and steady.

I have a 27 + hardtail to make a single speed. Would like to know what rear sprocket to start with? I have a 30 and 32 chainring. Going to ride it on mostly flat terrain similar
Basto down here in South Jersey. Any suggestions......

I think this may be a personal blog. But answering your question. I'm in SJ and usually ride a SS around Wharton and the Batsto trails. Since 27+ is close to 29, you should be good to go with 32x18t or 19t to start if you're just starting to SS.

That being said, I'm currently running 34x17 and would use that there.

It's really about trial and error. Do you have a hardtail with gears? See which one gear best fits with where you plan to ride. Then start from there, though it's likely you'll want to try one less or one more, and you have a drawer full of cogs... Also, you may want to try a 34 or 36 chainring. Btw, what's the bike you're using?

Thanks I will put the 32 on pick up a few cogs'
