Things that make you frown :(

These are new Sidi mega shoes next to my 12 year old nashbar with sheet rock screws holding the heels on. Gave my 3 year old carbon fiber specialized shoes to my friends son because the pain was so bad. Now the newer wider ones hurt 😢 so bad I am going back to the nashbars. Any suggestions on how to break in the new shoes.

Can you tell just by trying them on? Or do you need to ride with them for a while for the pain to kick in?

Buy larger shoes. Size up. Feet grow.

He's probably right.

But you can always try a shoe horn (no, not the plastic slippy thing) first, if they're made of a stretchable material. Places that specialize in shoes tend to have them, as I imagine, would cobblers. Basically, it's a well-mounted piece of closed pipe, that lets you put your weight on the shoe/concentrate the end of the pipe in one spot. You can locally stretch leather/fabric.

I, personally, have issues with my feet (super high arch), so I need a giant arch support/a metatarsal ball to keep my toes from splaying in shoes. The right insole (I want to say it was a Pedag, as they were one of the few I found with a giant arch and the metatarsal ball in one) can make an uncomfortable shoe work, if it is the above.

Me, too I have had luck with the specialized arch supports. I bought the Sidi mega width.

FWIW, I was a long time Shimano shoe user. Bought a pair of Sidi Dominators, mega width, to see if they were worth the hype. Could never get them to feel comfortable. Basically felt like I had my foot in a vise. And the plastic soles had no grip on rocks or pavement, not that they are a walking shoe. Did have some time using a Pearl Izumi shoe, but they were discontinued. Went back to Shimano, XC7s, and all it good with the feet.

Pisgah is just shy of being label a rain forest, correct?

the area is actually a temperate rainforest. just usually there's a break in the rain and most trails can dry out fairly quickly... we just seem to be having a constant wet spell right now.
