what are our options for 150 & 190/197 hubs other than i9, hope, and dtswiss?
are there any "budget" options like novatec or bikehubstore?

not just junk though, i have many thousands of miles on hubs from both companies and have never had any problems

if you wanted to have one wheelset to run 3.8 and 4.6 tires depending on season/conditions, what width rim would you go with, 80? 90? 100?
 
Bikehubstore actually does make fat hubs. And, they actually don't completely suck. I mean, they're not I9s, but they don't suck. 80mm is the best all-around rim width. The better carbon rims are 65 and 90mm although Light does make an 80, but they suck really bad. I wouldn't lace a bikestorehub hubset up to a carbon rim though, might be a waste of loot. HED is doing an 85mm alloy rim that looks like it will be awesome.

Jim, what's the best light weight hub pound for pound in your opinion
 
bhs sells i9's, but i only see a front in their "brand", no rear

how bout a nextie 80? (or are they the same shit?)

85mm carbon rims and 3.8's are a no no if you plan in the rocks. If it were an all season bike without changes I would go with 65mm nexties.
 
so salsa has branded formula hubs which are comparable quality to novatec, and IRD makes some too.

cheapest hub so far is the IRD @ $190
salsa is $250, at that point you might as well just get i9s
 
I have factory (Formula, I think), Hope, I9 and Onyx hubs. Factory hubs just can't take the torque. Hopes are ok but are known to have bearing issues. I9s are nice, smooth but stupid loud, can't hold a conversation while coasting, annoying swarm of bees, Bears run away loud. Onyx racing are silent, instant engagement and ceramic bearings but pricey. After riding i9s for a bit, I couldn't take the noise anymore, people say pedal more, but the reality is at some point you are going to coast and the i9 made me want to coast into a tree. I am riding on a factory hub that is tearing itself apart, (slipping, pinging and popping) because that is less annoying than the i9. If you can take the noise, go with i9, if you like peace and quiet, go Onyx. I would recommend getting the best rear hub you can afford and save some cash on a lower level front hub.

I use 65mm Nexties with 4" tires and AL 80mm for 5s, if I was going to ride 5" more I would go with 90mm Nexties. I didn't care for 5" on 65mm, too much flex in the corners
 
oh god dont give me any more incentive, i need to build an XC bike before i do the fatty

instead of making 10000 threads asking dumb questions ill just add this here:

anybody have any experience/impressions running 29+ on a fat frame? specifically a fatboy?

im having thoughts of selling ecr, and replacing it with a fatboy. with a 29+ wheelset for "regular" bikepacking, and snow and whatever with puffwheels, it seems like (in my head) basically the same bike just expanding its versatility.

its like i get another bike out of it without having to make room, and sorta justifies my purchase of a fatbike.
