i believe one of the fat-bike.com podcasts this winter got deep into tire size:rim width ratios and explained it all quite nicely

its the inner rim width that you gotta pay attention to

I guess I'll just wait and buy a set of Ibis wheels in the winter.
I was hoping to reuse my old hubs off the pivot. They are only 28 spoke and I'm not. finding anything wider than 28mm.

So basically what I'm getting is that it's possible on on thinner rims, but not necessarily ideal.

Indeed. It will mount, but handling will be sacrificed. A narrower rim will cause the tire to be taller, so under turning force it is more likely to pop off the bead, or at the very least, rub inside your frame or triangle under forces. Even more so because you want the wider tire so you can run lower pressure to make up for the lack of suspension, making all of the above even worse. In addition, you'll have a smaller contact patch than that of a wider wheel.

So what you guys are trying to tell me is try it with what I got and when I determine that it sucks, try with something wider.

No. What we're saying is get some super fancy, new age, carbon wheels to put on your retro bike and know that it'll work.

But I suppose you can do that too. You'll need tires anyway. Try them out. If you die, just get wider rims.

Took my DH bike to MC last Sunday and had a blast. I have been riding xc on 27.5x 3.0 & 2.8 lately and suddenly my DH Tire at 2.4" feel skinny.

Curious if anyone has tried 2.8" tires on a DH bike.

My buddy who rode with me was on his SC Hightower and he had a blast. We Mostly rode the easier stuff

Been watching Hans Rey on IG riding 3.0 tires on his Fury.

I grabbed a set of 2.5" tires today as mine were worn anyway. These may prove a hair wide for my flow ex rims, but I am eager to try a little more volume.

I either feel like there is too much air or I feel the rim bottoming out on occasion.

As a side note, the word across the board from industry types is that nationwide fatbike sales are dying and being replaced by plus. Makes sense to me as you get most of the upside of increased traction w/o the wider crank stance. The exception is in snowy areas, but even Derrick who used to own the fatbike only shop in LI is telling me that he is seeing fatbikes being replaced with plus.

Is a 28mm inner rim width ok for a 27.5 + tire 2.8 and 3.0.

Specifically E thirteen TRS PLUS rim 28 spoke. Part # RM3TPA-103

@jimvreeland ?????
For what its worth, I put 2.8's on my rims which are 25mm outer dim....19 or 20ish inner (hooked rims). This was just an experiment but they work fine. Granted I have to keep the pressure @ 18-19psi. under this pressure and I can feel it a little. Id rather ride a lower pressure but it is what it is and I'm pushing it as I know.

I've ridden them hard in allamuchy and have not had a problem. Its made my FS XC bike feel very different but in a good way. I don't consider my rims a long term solution but it worked for the experiment.
