Thule T2 owners beware!

The Thule t2 rack has been Thule's best seller for some time. So much so that they just came out with a nicer version as well.

There are a zillion of them on the road and more often we now sell hitch mounted racks instead of roof top for a bunch of reasons.

The reason for my warning is that many of these racks are starting to age and rust.

The j-hook that hold the front weel on is the first part that fails from rust.

The one pictured was on a friend's T2 and I was sure it was going to rust out. I put a little leverage on it and it twisted off in my hand.

My suggestion is that if you see some rust, be wary.

Thule sells replacement parts and if you are even slightly in doubt, replace the rusted parts.

What if I'm just too weak to move mine up and down without doing blowing out my back

That one was actually a warranty replacement for another stand up I had. The other one wore through the paint on a bike so they gave me a T2. Pretty good customer service

Taking your rack off in the winter also fixes this.
what if you use it all year? 🙂 I think I actually use mine more in the winter than the summer

My Kuat NV got some rust on it after 5 years being on my car without ever coming off...I think I spent 90 sec on the phone with them and they sent me an entire new lower section to replace this

I ride all year too, but it takes all of about 60sec to take it off the hitch and throw it behind the house, even with the lock thingy on the bolt. I'm constantly taking it on and off, and I've got the cannons to prove it.

Same thing recently happened to a Thule Kayak J Cradle of mine that I bought in 2004. It rusted to the point where I twisted the tubing and it came apart in my hands. Nothing lasts for ever i guess, especially when there's salt water dripping down it on the regs.

Apply POR15 to the racks before they rust and they won't rust.
Or light them on fire and post a video of it here.
