Question- what is the tipping point when performance sucks because tires are too low?

For me, it's when the sidewall flexes so much during turns it feels like the tire is about to roll off the rim. I seem to not like the super-low pressures a lot of guys do. We'll see. The WTB is known for having a soft/thin sidewall, so excessively low pressures might not be a good idea.

Update: Rode at Kingdom Trails again last weekend. Nice 23.5 mile loop with over 3100 feet of climbing. I ran the rear tire pressure in the upper teens and it was definitely nice for traction and smoothing out the near-ending roots on those trails. The scary bit was the numerous high-speed berms they have up there. Maybe my berm technique just sucks that bad, but it often felt like the tire wanted to roll off the rim. A couple of times it came damn close - to the point where I have some Stan's "seepage" at the bead.

This is what + tires suck at. Put too much pressure in, and it will suck in the roots. VT is long-travel trail bike country.

KT Pastore Point Loop

My buddy and I made 2 trips this year to the Kingdom Trails with our Scott 710 Plus (Hardtails). They are awesome there. We both run 40 mm internal wide rims. He runs 2.8 Nobby Nic's, I run 2.8 Maxxis Recon+. It's all about finding the correct tire pressure. I run 11 psi front & 18 psi rear (I am 165lbs). He is 205lbs and must run much higher pressure in the 20's and is a very fast down hill ( has KOM on one of the rocky down hills at Ringwood on the Scott).

Nice! I still have to install the new XT bits I recently bought with 46t. My new Primer is equipped with 46t XT as well.

On the one hand I love mid-fats but on the other hand I've come to the realization it's just not the size for the stuff I do. Oh well, live and learn.

I did the 40 mile MoCo Epic down in MD on Sunday with the Vassago 27.5+. This was the first time since I can remember that I've done a long ride like that on a hardtail. Now I don't know if I'd want to ride the bike on more natural rocky trails like in PA, but on the IMBA-style trails they have built down there the bike was perfect.

Is there enough of a difference between a 29 semi plus and a 27.5 plus?

My Pivot with boost spacing can run (according to Pivot), a 29 x 2.3 or a 27.5 x 2.8. I read in some forums that a 29 x 2.4 R and 29 x 2.5 F will fit. So other than the pressure differences between the 29 & 27.5 is there really that much of a difference? I'm thinking that the 29 x 2.5 would be a happy medium / best of both worlds option.

But 27.5 x 3 is the happy medium. Between the 2.2 and a Fat Bike. So your only maybe Quarter Fat, definitely not Mid Fat.
