what do you read?

I could not find the other thread. I spent a whole 3 minutes looking and ain’t nobody got time for that.
I just got these. I was reading the Stand but I really don’t have the stomach to read that book right now.

I just got these.

Are you reading or listening?

I read Snow Crash and it was fine. I listened to Reamde and it was much better. Curious if he’s just better on audio or what.

Has anyone read The Fifth Season? I’m almost done with the Kindle sample and I’m just not seeing the value here. Even though it’s incredibly well-regraded I’m having trouble pulling the trigger on the book.

@jShort

Here. I’ll merge them.
I wouldn't have been offended if you just deleted my 3 post mistake. Lol.

Anybody got something fun to read? I've tried to reread a few books and have just not gotten into it. I used to read a ton when I was on tour or commuting to NYC, but have not read anything in like 5 years now. Need something new to get into. Thanks in advance.

What do you generally enjoy? Give me 3 books you like.

I'm in the mood for something fun. I like funny books. Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, dharma bums, and into the wild come to mind for 3 books. Ive read big ones like Atlas Shrugged and the entire game of thrones series, but fun little books with cool stories are my favorite.

Well, I would hardly call Into the Wild fun but if you like that I would say you'll like Where You'll Find Me or Stranger in the Woods.

If you like SciFi I would say any of these 3:

Murderbot Diaries
Bobiverse
Good Omens - too many Amazon links, you can find it

Sirens of Titan by Vonnegut. Maybe not "fun" per se.
Thanks. I'm gonna try these.

Into the Wild is super fun...until the end. It's about a young smart guy not wanting to conform to society who decides to travel the county and live an adventure. But instead of dying an old sad carnival worker, he goes out in a blaze of glory in wild Alaska foolishly eating the wrong mushrooms.

The book was a good read but if you look into it, it’s almost entirely fabricated by Krakauer. I once found a critique on it where they showed what he based the novel on. Something like a 430 word set of notes. 430 words, not pages.

Anyway, I digress.

Last three books I read:
Grand central winter, mindhunter, and vacationland.
Grand central winter is a collection of autobiographic stories about being homeless in nyc. Pretty solid, definitely the type of book I gravitate towards so I’m biased.
Mindhunter is pretty depressing but surprisingly entertaining.
Vacationland I enjoyed. I’m sure John hodgman isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but I like him.

Welllllllllllllllllll, that's a bummer. Let's at least hope the kid had a good ride. But knowing that puts his philosophy and spirit in question. Ah well

John hodgman, like the comedian?

I used to think a good bit about the homeless of NYC. Not an easy city to be homeless, with the cold winters and all.

I just looked at Hugo awards and runners up and picked these randomly.

I’m actually reading. Lately I find reading is helping me sleep.
I just started Snow Crash. I’m not expecting it to be great, but I like him and I feel like this is an essential (starting to hate that word) book of his to read.
I’m looking forward to Ninefox Gambit.

Yes, he’s written several books. He was an author and a literary agent before he started acting.

Let me know if any of the other 3 are worth it. I am finding Huge Award books sometimes overly complex, like you need a glossary and a notepad to follow.

Starting the signed second edition of Boardwalk Empire that I was given this summer. Met the author in passing, w/o knowing who he was some years ago at the county court house. If I didn't have this book, I'd probably be re-reading John McPhee's Pine Barrens book for the hundredth time.

I was reading the Stand but I really don’t have the stomach to read that book right now.

Yeah, I understand the feeling. Like an idiot, I started reading "The Uninhabitable Earth" a week ago. I had to put it down about a hundred pages in. I just can't right now. I also finished "Wanderers" about a month or two before all this started. It's kind of like The Stand only many more parallels with what's actually going on now, so that's kind of fun to think about.

I just started reading The Divine Cities series by Robert Jackson Bennett (link shows all his books.) I read the first book in his new series, Foundryside, in 2018 or so and I'm waiting for it's followup (Shorefall) this month (if it arrives.) He's a good storyteller. I'm only about 50 pages into City of Stairs, but so far it's pulled me in.

Just finished The Radium Girls if anyone is interested in reading about the horrific effects of young girls painting clock, watch and instrument dials with radium for luminescence.
