This is sad.A 60 yr old man died yesterday and a 40 yr old woman today. Both had heart complications during the swim part.Something is not right.I hope there is an investigation and changes are made.:hmmm:

Yea, we talked about that one this morning. These things do happen even to the best of athletes but the older guy was part of a team and was only doing the swim. It makes you wonder if they were up for the challenge. Even in the best of shape, you jump from a cold start into murky waters with a mass of people and if you get crowded out or swam over and go under who sees you? Who notices that one of 400 people is doubling over? And even if you do notice, you still have to relay that info to someone in a boat. Every second is precious on the water...

Very sorry for the families and friends.

pretty sad to hear...i hate to see them come down on the race directors and have to "re-evaluate" the dynamics. to me the NYC Tri seems a lot like the NYC Marathon--in the sense that many people do it just to say they have done it...this is a big time race on one of the more advanced courses in the area. i think in the future (for the NYC Tri), perhaps you should have to submit previous races times/experience before you can register, not just the lottery format that has been set up for the past few years...and maybe extra attention should be paid to racers of a certain age (hmmm say 60??🙄)

just my .02

My heart goes out to their families and I will certainly keep them in my thoughts. I would guess that they both had heart conditions that would have manifested at some point.

If you read the link that was provided by JP, it clearly says that 7/9 people they studied had preexisting conditions, and that difficulty in getting to them probably contributed.

It is very sad, but it is not a reflection of the sport or the race promoter.

There are people well into their 70's and 80's that race full Ironman triathlons. It is not an "age thing", it is a matter of these particluar racers having a heart condition. Sad, but true.
