2010/2011 XC Ski Thread

I'm new to the sport this year but Washington Crossing Park seems to always have tracks. Its a great mix of open fields and wooded trails with some rolling terrain. You can cross right into Baldpate too.

Monday 1/3

Went to Allaire today after work. There is still a ton of snow here and the lot is not plowed so I parked across the street.
The quality of the snow was not great today, had a lot of crust despite going out in the afternoon...it never really got warm enough to soften the snow today.
Still had fun, I got lost at Allaire and was there in the dark. I always get temporarily lost when I go there but in the snow I get temporarily lost longer...the snow makes the place look different.

Tuesday 1/4

Put some time in at Watchung Reservation today. The south faces suck, the north is better but the snow is spotty and inconsistant = poor condtions.

I am hoping for a rapid meltdown so I can ride my bike again or some more snow for xc skiing.
Looking at the forecast I may be on the skis for awhile yet.

I hope to xc darlington golf course on Saturday as it appears we have enough of the whitebstuff. Saw xc ski tracks today at dunkerhook before the plows hit around 1pm

Saturday 1/8

I didn't think I would be able to get out today due to lack of snow. Working in Monmouth Co. yesterday there was no measurable snow, but is was nice to see 4" in Cranford when I got home.

Spent 2 hrs in the Watchung Reservation this morning. They had about 4" of soft fresh powder on top of icy ruts from previous snow melt. This was not bad but what was bad was the 125 runners they had participating in a 50k through the reservation. The 4" of freshness was beaten down into the hardpack underneath. I was able to stay out of the hardpack in some areas but on the single track it was kinda hard. Needless to say it was like soap on ice in some spots and other areas where beautiful. All in all conditions where ok, we need another 6"+ to cover the icy rutted hardpack underneath...then we're golden.(maybe Tuesday/Wed.😉)

Yesteday I had about 6 inches in my back yard.... that's what she said! I thought Waway would be my best choice for ski today. Much to my surprise, it got less than 4 inches of snow, and it was on top of near bare ground. So, I turned around and went to Ringwood. They had a bit more new and more base as well. It was great in the garden lawns of Skylands Manor. The rocky trails were marginal at about 9 inches of snow, but was just about right for today. If I go out tomorrow, it will be Harriman b/c I think that may be the best in this area. Not sure if would be worth a real long drive though.

1. bamboo in the gardens

2. a tree eating an old sign on the race course. The snow looked liked eyes.

Did allaire get any of that snow or was it further south? Up near Red Bank only got about an inch and it wasn't enough to improve conditions?

Harriman ski trails from Sebago, 1/9/11: Very wintery conditions. It never got above 29 degrees today and was windy. In many places still over a foot of snow, but plenty of thin spots from quads, hikers, snowshoers and wind. We needed to search around for depth between tracks, but dooable and really good soft snow. We did full loop to Pine Meadow. Tons of hikers out there today. May stay good for a few more days with the cold temps predicted.

Allaire recieved a dusting, not enough to make an improvement.

I wanted to get up to Ringwood today but the sickness that has been going aroung this winter caught up with me. Sat on the couch all day fighting a fever and head cold, hopefully I'll be better in time for some fresh snow Tues./Weds.

Thanks for posting conditions up north Ellen, hopefully it will stay good for awhile.

Garden state ski club had an impromptu xc event at darlington golf course. When I got to work todag I realized I shoulda brought skiis. Being some what under thr weather it looks like the skiing will be good for several days

Wednesday 1/12

Beautiful conditions at Watchung Res. this afternoon, the snow was like sugar. Followed some tracks, laid some tracks. These conditions probably won't last too long so get out on the snow while its good.

Darlington county golf course today. Conditions were great with about 6-8 new on top of some old. May hold for a few days. Will probably try Harriman or Ringwood tomorrow. I think to the west got less snow, not sure.
